I am wondering if this code means the transmission is going bad. I have had the hard shift from first to second every since I bought the car & have been meaning to change the TSS. Will that help with this Code 628?

I've done the drop & fill method about 5 times on this car. My mechanic does it for me though he only drops 4 quarts. Even though the car has 150,000 on it I'd like to get the flush done. I did it on my 2000 when it had around 90,000 on it & have had no problems other than to replace the range sensor & I doubt the transmission flush would have caused that part to fail, right?

I priced the TSS at the local Ford Dealer. It is $36.80 & listed as Fort Part 7M101. Does anyone know if this is the correct part. I've read that the improved TSS is while & the old one is dark. Is there a way for me to look & see if the old one is still on my car. I ask because the dealer will not take the part back if I don't need it since it is a special order.

One thing I did not mention about the hard shifting, especially from first to second is that the car does not do it all the time. There are long periods of time when the shifting is quiet & then the hard shifting returns. If the TSS were the problem wouldn't the problem be all the time?

Yes, it would. But for $37 or so, why not try the TSS first?

I've got the same issue with my 95 V6/ATX. Replaced all sorts of stuff - even the torque converter. Eventually found a note in the instructions in a valve body upgrade kit that tells you how to verify that your TC is locking up at speed and to put a pressure gauge on one of the ports to the left of the pan to measure TC pressure. I found that my TC pressure dropped at the trans warmed up to the point it couldn't lock up. 628 occurs after about 30 miles of continuous driving. The easy solution was to get one of those $35 code scanners, build an extension cord for it with spade terminals so that it can sit in the little cubby hole underneath the radio. Soon as it starts shifting hard I pull over, use the code reader to reset the computer (takes about a minute) and I'm off again.

You can also just cycle the key and the trans codes will reset. Line pressure will return to normal until it sees a problem again.

I recently have been trouble shooting this issue and have found that in my case the TSS helps, but does not solve the issue. I also did the fluid change as well as install the trans-go shift kit. The shift kit seems to be doing the most help. I haven't had a harsh 1-2 shift yet, but I also haven't fully tested it on the Hwy. Start searching the old forums, a lot of good info from guys who already dealt with this. Search for unisys12 (I believe). He's even got a personal site with a section dedicated to the CD4E. Lot's of info.

Hope that helps a little,

Chris :)

Interesting, a 628 code (and the high trans pressure) will not reset itself in my Contour just by cycling the key. I had to pull the battery power or reset with the code reader.

Must be a different issue that you're dealing with. When ever it would start 1-2 bang shifting all I did was put it in neutral, cycle the key and put her back in drive... Viola, no more bang shift until my trans saw a problem again.

I had read this in other posts as well as on other forums. Difference is I was only searching under the term "Bang Shift" and not your specific code.

Chris

It means to turn the car completely off and then start it up again. At a stop light I'd shift into neutral (or park), shut her off and start her back up again. Vrooom! No more head banging.

:)
