Replacing the connector for the blower resistor on my 1998 ford contour I need to know the wires colors and locations on the connector. I have black, yellow/black and two blue/black wires. Looking at the connector as it fits into the resistor pack they are top left _____ wire? top right______wire? Bottom left ________wire? bottom right_______wire?

I have a 1996 and my replacement resistor connector with wires are,
if you are looking at the wire end, and with the crown on top,

..... .----
_____! ....!_____
! Brown Yellow !
! . ...............!
! Red Orange !
_____________

Hope this helps. Good luck.

correct info above...

if your wiring harness is completely melted into the old resistor then you need to buy a new wiring kit..

The Ford part number is F5RZ-14A411-CA and its called a Blower Motor Resistor Connector Repair Kit

it will plug directly into your new resistor (part 3M5Z-18591-BA) and comes with some splice connectors

each part is under 10.00 from Ford Jenkins

I have 2 1998 SVT Contours which both needed to have these parts replaced. -- its a simple procedure and cheap to boot.

Connecter melted

I have all the parts and know its location (under the passenger side dash board). My problem is I have loose wires and dont know what color goes to what on the new connecter.

if you bought both the resistor and the resistor wiring replacement kit you should be able to just hold both your fried wires w/plug next to the new wiring harness, same positions will be tapped into the new harness. (IE hold the harness clip in the same fashion, tab up or down on both)

even if the colors dont match per say it will be obvious as to what ones go where in relation to the plug as it only goes in 1 way..

Make sure you check the wiring at both the Fuse block and blower motor as well. I had the switch changed under warranty a long time back, but then the wiring fried and shorted out at the Fuse Block (had to replace it) then a year later I had to replace the wiring at the blower motor side because it too shorted out and melted.

The old connecter was cut off already SO I cannot try you suggestions. Please advise?

what the heck does the resitor pack do?

what the heck does the resitor pack do?

BTW what the heck does the resitor pack and new wires do anyway. My blower works same as when it was conected only on high.

Will someone with a 1998 model please unplug his/her resistor pack and post with reference to my previously posted diagram?

In combination with the switch on the dash, it changes the speed of the blower for the 4 speeds that you are supposed to have.

I need to do the second SVT tomorrow with the harness and resistor pack replacement..

if someone does not post before I do the second car tomorrow I'll chime back in on what wire went to what color for you.

Brown splices into black w/blue stripe
Yellow splices into black
Red splices into black w/yellow stripe
Orange splices into black w/blue stripe

Note - there are 2 wires which are both black w/blue stripe... I spliced my wires two at a time so I did not confuse them, although it may not be that important.

BTW - make sure that you fully snap that new resistor in all the way too...

the back area needs to snap in before you tighten the screw so it seats properly -- if you dont the majority of your heat will escape out the footwell later.

Thanks

Thanks

The car died on the way home. I will try to figure out whats wrong then fix the wires. Thank you VERY much for your help.

Blower random on ?

Blower random on ?

Ok I got the car running and connected the wires and resister. All speeds seem to work but only when it decides too. What is the next thing to replace?

Man, I saw this thread pop up again and thought "What now?"

This sounds like either, the switch or the fuse (or holder). I would change the fuse first. Then check the holder, and then the switch.

Edit. One more thing. It could also be the blower motor itself.
