Started to mock up an engine with COP conversion and some otehr funn stuff at the shop, and encountered something i have not read about, hoping someone can help....

I've got 04 Taurus valve covers and coils mounted up, and with the SVT lim installed, go to install the upper and it interferes with the coils, and appears as thought it would also hit the valve covers if the coils were out of the way and it dropped some more....

Do i need escape valve covers and coils or something to make this happen?? Pardon the shizzy pics please.

Can't say i have seen COP + 2.5 UIM...

Edit: and you cant use 3L valve covers with 2.5 UIM IIRC?

ive never seen it either, the only COP swaps I have ever seen were full 3L, not port matched.

I think your only option if you want to stay with a port matched setup is to have a plenum machined to raise your UIM. Shouldnt be too expensive to get someone to cut one out of plastic. Not the cheapest thing in the world either, but it would get you going right? 1/2 or 3/4 inch should work fine right? that would give you a little bit of clearance between the cover and the UIM, then you could just seal it with silicon and eliminate the gasket right? Plus it would cut down on heat soak a bit too, so that might be useful.

:edit get someone to make a few of them for you and sell them with some taurus valve covers from a salvage yard along with a wire harness for the conversion and call it a COP conversion kit.

That would work too. Although something that just dawned on me, you would need longer bolts to now wouldnt you?

'zactly, a spacer is in order. Not that I need to point it out, but keep in mind you'll be using another UIM gasket which will add a bit to raise it up. Maybe like 3/16" when the o-rings are compressed.

I thought I saw where Dom or TH did COP w/ the other valve covers & A 2.5 UIM. The smooth black ones are threaded for COP & seem like they would fit. I've got all the stuff lying around & I could do a mock up but it will be this weekend before i'm at the shop.

phenolic spacer anyone

I know someone who does custom ones...and they won't charge you an arm and a leg.

Haha, already using non-stock fasteners. Get out of my head!!!

Though I still think a poly plastic piece would be a better option. It would cut down on heat soak and be cheaper, especially compared to aluminum, to good of a conductor, and its still pricey even if you are doing your own machining compared to plastic. Plus then you would eliminate the need for the gaskets and cut down on at least 2 points where you could potentially have a leak. IDK, I thought thats why GM uses the plastic plenums on their 3800s. I dont remember if fastenal carries sheets of poly anymore or not.... but yeah, if you can make it out of aluminum, then plastic is easy.

real phenolic spacers for cheap? cause yeah that would be the best way to go.

You have a couple options and they are all listed above

-portmatched to use the 2.5L UIM
-full 3L so 3L UIM clears COPs
-intake spacer below 2.5L UIM to clear COPs
-older plastic style 3L valve covers with COP and 2.5L UIM

This is all info that I read about, could be other options - I am sure someone will chime in.

BAH hammer and the flame wrench will cure that problem. This is PRT we are talking about isn't it???? Sorry had to do it.

What about the EGR pipe reaching now? PCV plumbing?

I have '01 UIM with IAC relocated and custom EGR. Would be easier to just bolt on. Let it go cheap.

i had a conversation with Dom over on FCO a few months ago. he said that there is no way to retain the svt UIM with a COP setup. he said people ask him that constantly and theres just no reasonable way to do it

Phenolic spacer would be the way to go if you're spacing and you'd want to do it on top of the LIM to keep the injectors in the proper spot.

The material would probably run you 50-75 bucks plus machining.

This http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/mepages/phenolic.php is what I used for mine.

Keep in mind that spacing up the intake manifold also increases your runner length possibly decreasing high rpm power slightly and increasing mid-range-ish power.

With SVT cams it's probably not ideal. With 3L cams it might work out better. You probably won't notice any difference though.
