i have a 98.5 contour svt 128,000 miles

so i have had a noise coming from my tranny for about a week or so, i heard it when it got cold out one day and i rolled up my windows and didn't have my radio on.

it is a clatter to a tick hard to explain sounds, but i took it up to the shop by me and he knew right away what it was, i was thinking throw out bearing but he showed me the difference between what i thought it was and what it really was he called it the input bearing shaft,

he told me that the more i drive the more damage that can possibly happen...he said it can start cause damage the shaft or something, he was hard to understand, anyways he gave me two options one he could tear down my old tranny and go from there with what he needs he said it would be $1500 before parts, or he can get a used REGULAR contour tranny with 69,000 miles on it and install and everything with a 12/12 warrenty on parts and labor for $1875
so my question is..what is the differnce between the regular contour 5 speed verses the svt, i know of the flywheel and all that but i didnt know if the gearing is differnt or anythig.

also how hard would it be to do it yourself? i have more parts then a nascar garage due to tech school, but i dont want to get in over my head,

any input would be great, if there is someone on here that has a svt tranny for sale i could go that route to and have them install it

i bought this car from reebs and he said it has new syhncros and clutch so i will take my clutch from this one and put it into the new/used one

No difference in the regular and SVT transmissions.

So he based all of this on a sound? Is there anything more that you can tell us about the transmission? Does it shift differently or anything?

Here's another thought, a click from the front end when driving could also be a CV joint going out. So the axles shouldn't be ruled out unless it is definatively coming from the trans.

yeah you can tell its from the tranny, by where the sound is at..

i will try and make a video right now to show you the sound,

shifts fine and there is nothing else wrong to my knowledge,

man you guys are fast at responds

Does it make the noise in neutral, in gear, driving in a straight line, corners?

Sound travels and there a lots of things that can make noise and be transmitted through other parts nearby.

very true it does it only when in gear. the more the rpms the faster it is.

if you leave it in gear you can also hear it like when coming to stop with it in gear

i am posting a video on you tube here real soon and will post a link to it

if it is in gear you will hear it no matter the driving conditions...

this being said i lifted the front tires off the ground and i did NOT here to noise

I don't think that is internal. Sounds like the flywheel teeth are catching on something. If the car drives and shifts ok I would venture to say the pressure plate or something in the flywheel is about to let go.

Is that like awkward color? Anywho, nothing internal is going to make a sound like that. I'd take it to another shop. For that much $ have it shipped up here to MI. I charge for R&R. Parts are on top of that.

i will have another shop look tomm and keep you guys updated, if it comes down to it i can ship it up there.

i just don't wanna be driving and have it to boom...

i am glad Costco pays me good and will come get me if i have car problems otherwise i would be screwed!

If the sound is there with the trans in gear but absent when in neutral it just about has to be internal, but beyond the input bearing and shaft. I would guess that it may be a chipped tooth on the cluster gear or one of the gears it mates to. I don't think it is a bearing.

I would not drive it either. It is about to go boom.

didnt get a whole lot of luck today and finding out what my problem is, took it to 2 places to see what they said and one of them wanted to charge me $20 to get in the car to hear the noise, and the other said it sounds like my rear drive shaft is popping....yeah

LMAO! Rear drive shaft? Umm a fwd car has 2 axles. Either way it has to come out no matter what the issue is.

I agree with it sounding like a clutch/flywheel issue nothing inside of the trans would make that issue and still function properly.

yeah i tried to pin point the sound a little better today it sounds like it is where the trans connects to the engine,

sounds are very hard to pin point but i will try and rig up a mic to get a better sound and the area,

maybe i have an AWD contour and never knew!

is that a first on ceg?
