ok so im pretty sure i have a bad ac compressor.. i dont really care enough to get a new one. is deleting the ac worth it? is there really any gain?

of course you'll gain a few ponies by deleting it. but do you really want to delete it? if you used the A/C a lot when its hot out, its worth keeping. when you're racing, you turn it off anyways and then it just acts as an idler pulley

one day you will regret it i imagine

x2

my ac compressor blew out on my last trip to NY. i was debating on whether or not to delete it. the last hour of my trip was total hell with no AC in 80+ degree weather. first thing i did was go to the junkyard and grab a compressor.

your not going to gain anything. the a/c pulley just free wheels when it isn't on and it shuts off when you go to wot anyway ....

I agree you will have more trouble selling the car without a/c if you ever do.

If you do delete the AC, just do it by using a different belt. On one of my mazdas I deleted the AC and yes the car seemed happier but I certainly didnt when I realized I could have found/fixed the leak and been much more comfortable.

ok then, i guess ill keep it cuz i do have sticky leather seats.lol
but im not accually know what the problem is with it. i turn it on, and the clutch engages for about 3 second, and then turns off, and repeats. so while driving, the car jerks forward when it turns off and dies when it turns on. andone who if that is a sign of a bad compressor

I took it to speedy auto service to have them check out my ac. They said the same thing (turns on then off after a few seconds), then asked if I wanted to buy a new one for $600. Since it's mainly used as my winter car, I opted not too. I went to pick up the car, they said "it's working for now because we added some freon, but it'll probably die soon". It's been running the ac for 2 months now. You may just be low on freon/have a leak. Look into that first.

Also, if you actually removed the compressor, you would gain a bit because the car would weigh less. How much faster? probably not much to be honest with ya.

Sounds like you have a slow leak and need some freon with leak stopper.

noo, i filled her up with some, and it thats not the problem.. its allready at the correct pressure.
soo i dont kno what it is..
i just pulled the ac relay for now so i can use the defroster without the car bucking..
any other ideas?

Could have to do with the clutch needing to be shimmed. I thought I read somewhere that if the gap was too large it would kick in and out a lot. I think I have this going on in my Cougar but it's not toooo bad yet.

nope, totally not worth removing it. If theres a problem with the clutch or anything like that, you can always put in a non-a/c belt and leave the whole a/c assembly in place.

its quite a pain to remove all that junk and its really not all that heavy [like MAYBE 20 pounds]. you'll likely get slightly better cooling with the a/c radiator removed.

I am running with the no a/c belt on until I can afford to have the compressor (and associated bits) replaced. There was a noticeable increase in power when I bypassed the a/c, but it may have been because the bearings were on the way out. The compressor completely seized and ended up snapping the original belt.

I remember pole removing it to save weight....it weighed only 17lbs.

If you really want, you can bypass the air conditioning, just make sure to get a shorter sized belt.

BINGO!

The AC pulley is nothing more then an idler pulley when the magnetic clutch is not engaged.

You can drop ~20lbs if you ditch the entire A/C system. This equates to next to nothing in performance by itself.

A typical car without working A/C loses half of it's value at resale.

Freon? Are you 1995?
Actually Freon is a Dupont trade name. However it is also generically used for any type of pressurized refrigerant using fluorocarbons. (i.e "R" number 12, 21, 22, 134A, et cetera...)

I'd take Freon over having to say a type of "pressurized fluorocarbon refrigerant" leak. ;)

these cars are almost to the point of not worth reselling. there are other areas of gain outside of performance. i removed the complete system in my car.
1)car runs cooler w/out the condensor in the way of the radiator
2)allows you to install a oil pressure gauge in the proper location much easier
3)omp strut bar fits better w/out the hard line by the booster being in the way
4)you can pull your fan from the top w/out jacking the car up
5)engine bay looks cleaner and less clutered

Try living down south and not having air.:blackeye:

Since you never see long term summers, it's no problem for you and I

I must admit without the ac the engine bay looks way better!!
