Winterizing the Tour

Some of you may know I'm heading off to Michigan Tech Univ next fall. Seeing how my car will be coming with me, it is in need some some changes. First of all I need to get a spare set of rims and some nice winter tires. I got a battery pack jumper as a graduation gift so that is covered. Next I was thinking about some mud flaps of some sort, to keep some of the snow out of the body.

Other then that I've been thinking about replacing the fogs or adding a set of high power driving lights for driving through the country. I would either relay them into the fog light control or into the highbeam control. I need to make this thing into as much of a truck as possible.

Just get some steelies for wheels to put the snow tires on.
You don't need anything fancy (unless you can get some aluminum wheels for less than you can find steelies, of course).

Have you never driven in snow before??

I live in west michigan...I know snow. Thing is I'm going from about 5' of snowfall a winter to 20'. Steelies are most likely what I will be buying, unless of course I get a good deal.

kitty litter good ;) snow bad :P salt worse:mad: I need to find a winter turd New York winters kill cars ,does your state use salt ?

thanks for the link ctmystique. The kitty litter is a good idea.

What do you guys recommend for winter tires?

lol I don't think kitty litter is gonna do much good in the trunk seen as how our cars are fwd and putting weight in the back does nothing unless its rwd. kenny I am waiting to here back from boumacj about those wheels, as far as tires go I have ran blizzaks on my old beretta and those seemed to work great!

Kitty litter is for getting traction when stuck, even then the extra weight would help because I was drifting all over last winter.

I got a set of Blizzak REVO 1 snow tires last winter on closeout from tirerack. I was going from using summer only tires in the winter :help:to the Blizzaks. I don't know if there might be better options out there, but I was very happy with them. Granted they still spun when provoked, but I never got stuck, and was always able to stop.

you need traction for the front wheels though kenny, kitty litter might help a little bit if your turning but not much, going straight though you need more weight in the front, maybe put something heavy in the front passenger side on the ground where someones feet would be, like kitty litter I guess?

Naw you aren't understanding what I'm saying. Last winter my trunk was empty, and thanks to my lovely drums my rear tires would lock up (lack of weight) and once I turned my ass end would be trying to pass the front. A couple a bricks is what I should have back there.

Seeing how I already have two seperate patches of rust, I'm not going to worry about making this tour one of the best here. It is slowly going to become my autox whore/rallymobile. Now I just need to find some nice off road tires and get some good lighting on the front.

riiiiiiighhhhhhhhhttt. kenny did you get anywhere with some wheels yet? I havent heard back from bouma yet so I dunno?

It's not up north so you don't need a truck-like car. All you need is a gun to fend off the toids, a fast car to flee from them at night, and a sack of cash to pay tuition at school. You've never been to Flint have you? Consider yourself lucky.

lol I have heard bad things about flint, although it can't be much worse then detroit and I have been there quite often and never got messed with.

Can we stay on topic here?

Ron I haven't gotten anywhere with rims yet but I've been keeping an eye on all the FS threads. Today while I'm out at Mr. Axle I'm going to call up a few junkyards about focus rims seeing how they are much more common.
