Process to replace lost key?

This has never happened before until now. I lost one of the two keys to my car a few weeks ago. I have been meaning to get a replacement but have not up to now. Well today I misplaced/lost my only other key for my car. I arrived home and can't remember where I put it. It may still turn up but my question is what is the best way to get a replacement key made? A locksmith or a Ford dealer?
 
Actually, for a 2000 Contour with the PATS system, the only way is through a Ford Dealer. $$$$$
 
Yeah, my one and only key broke last week, had to get it towed to a Ford dealership. 25 per key (have to buy 2 in order for them to program it) and 45 for the programming.
 
i had a locksmith come and do mine when i lost them. i bought the blanks on ebay for ~$20/each.
when i told the locksmith, he said he would have sold me 2 for ~$20.

i think the programming/cutting my keys was $40ish.
 
Yeah, if people would read their owner's manuals, they would see that it probably pays to go buy 3rd key from Ford and preprogram it yourself to work before they lose the 2nd one. I do it on every car I buy, I don't like giving money to dealerships, especially "stupid" money (stupid because I didn't do it myself when it was FREE). With a routine tow charge of $175 it will more than pay off.
 
Thanks for the info. I remembered I have an old friend that worked at a Ford dealer. He's the body shop manager. He said pretty much the same thing. I had to bring the car in. Lucky I have a car trailer I can put in on at take it in. I don't have to pay for a tow truck. He said it would run over $100 bucks. I think I will get 3 keys made.
 
good idea.. you COULD always get two made, then have the third done for free on your own at home.. but if they charge a FLAT RATE for programming 2 OR 3 then go ahead!
