Not sure if anyone is aware of this but Ace hardwares sell and program pats keys as long as you have one to program the new key from.
The cost is $59 for the key and programming , not sure if this is all Ace hardwares or not , but it is a much cheaper alternative to the stealership who wanted almost $100 for the key and programming

you can find the key itself on Ebay alot, then just need to have it cut. it should tell you how to set it for your car, but not sure.

I just purcased a 2000 Contour and it only came with a replacement key. The originals are gone. I just had two new keys made and they had to reprogram the Pats at the dealer and it came to $86. I guess not all dealers charge the same.

Two working keys? My book only mentions one key and the new key you're programming.

IIRC, the 2 working keys applies to 98 only. 98 was the first year for PATS in the Contour/Mystique. It has an external PATS unit while 99-00 has PATS built into the PCM. Programming keys and remotes for the different years is different.

you need two working keys to program a third for 98.5 and later cars. the early 98 with the type 1 PATs only require one key ...

Do I need a special key for '96?

Do I need a special key for '96?

Lost one of my keys (senior moment - don't ask, but I think they ended up in the trash) and wondering about replacement. I still have one key fob w/key. I just bought a 'clone' radio key fob (3050E from Remotesandkeys.com) and then noticed they sell special keys too. Just looking to confirm that 1996 Merc Mystique key is nothing special, and I can get a new one cut at the hardware store? So far my info search shows the special keys starting around '98, correct?
