My wife has a 1998 GL 4cylinder, which consequently has been the best car either of us have ever owned as far as reliability goes!

She really likes my stereo system, which consists of a JL 500/1 hooked to 3 10w1s, and a 300;4 hooked to all jl components.

She currently has polk audio specials from circuit city in her doors, which arent horrible speakers, but she wants a little better sound.

I was on crutchfield, and really like the idea of a powered subwoofer. They have this:

http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=51000&i=108BASSLN2&c=3&tp=114&avf=N

Infnity BassLink Powered subwoofer with a 250 watt amplifer.

There is also a slot for an add on amplifier called a basslink module, which is a 4 channel amplifier in itself. If I buy the BassLink powered subwoofer, you get that module for free.

So basically, for 250 bucks, I could get her a nice subwoofer, that wont take up much space, and it will come with a amplifier to send 35 watts to each of the 4 speakers.

Is it worth it?

I put the sub portion of that in a toyota celica, older body style, IIRC I don't remember it being all that bassy... Personally all-in-ones are okay, but I'd rather have a separate sub/amp setup....

Since your wife got quality speakers in the doors, 35 watts is not going to do anything for them. 35 watts is weak for those speakers. You want something in the 50-watt range or better.

I recommend a 2-amplifier setup. Get a 4-channel amplifier which produces at least 50 watts per channel. Mount it under the driver or passenger seat. Also, get a 2-channel amplifier with enough power to drive a good 10-inch subwoofer in a sealed box. You can mount the amplifier on the unused side of the box and mount the box in the trunk. This setup will not take a whole lot of space and your wife will get the quality sound she's looking for.

If you need help in picking out the amps, let me know and I'll assist.

Well, the other option is jsut a small amp and sub, and not amp the speakers inside... or a 5 channel amp. The only reason i brought up the basslink is cause it was on special with the little amplifier thing included...

IMO there okay, but they are still a crap setup, you'll be better off with a separate amp/sub setup like stated earlier.
A small yet effective setup would be like the alpine MRP-M450 400x1 @ 2ohm, a Type R 12", and a sealed box to go with it. I've seen people push the Type E 12" with that amp and it sounded pretty good, although those people have blown that sub up twice claiming they were only listening to it at a "normal" level, but I'd beg to differ...

A 5-channel amp is not a bad idea. Just make sure that the 5th channel has enough power to drive a 10-inch subwoofer.

I would disagree w/ the type R and go w/ the type E. IIRC the m450 puts out 200x1 @ 4 ohms and the type E is 200 or 250 single voice coil 4 ohm so that should work perfectly. Oh, and I've heard the type E w/ that amp and loved it. For some reason I just don't like Type R's.

and I've run the amp @ 400w x 1 @ 2ohm with a Type R (DVC) and it sounded just fine... hmmm... less power vs more power and a sub that can handle more power.... I think I want more bump... but you can go with either one, both will work with that amp....
