Hey guys, I just got a 99 Contour SE and It is stuck of defrost all the time unless it's on OFF. How do I fix this? This seems to me like some kind of vacuum problem but I may be wrong. Any help is appreciated! THANKS!

Thanks! I just checked that and it's all good. Any other suggestions?

On the Contour, there was a TSB published advising the techician to inspect the connection between the output shaft of the vacuum motor (right above the gas pedal) and the bellcrank. The shaft pops off the bellcrank leaving the bellcrank in the defrost position. The fix is to put it back on and to secure it with a press-on type retainer washer.

My wife calls me every month or two and tells me to put it back together. Next time I get the car in the garage for a day, I need to install the retainer.

Thank you so much you guys are awesome. I'm going to look into both of these suggestions this weekend and if those don't fix it I'll just assume it's the heater controls. -Adam

Hey guys it's me again. I checked all those thing and all are good. We checked all the vacuums under the hood and they all have vacuum. Then inside theres a big black plug that goes into the bottom of this box right next to where the black one goes coming out of the control panel. It has no vacuum. So... is it somewhere between that plug and the green line under the hood that comes out of the firewall?

Did you check to see whether the vacuum motor I previously mentioned is moving or not when the control switch is placed in and out of the defrost postion?

Then inside theres a big black plug that goes into the bottom of this box right next to where the black one goes coming out of the control panel. It has no vacuum.

What in the world are you referring to??????

Simply stating "all is good" is not sufficient since you're not certain of what you're looking at or for. Give explicit descriptions of your observations so we can, at least, have a clue what you are seeing.

The correct vacuum distribution from the intake is to a vacuum reservoir (accessed through a removed glove box) then to the mode control vacuum switch on your dash via the black hose.

Sorry, yes the line coming to the vacuum reservoir from the intake is the one that has no vacuum. So it has to be a problem prior to reaching the reservoir...

I STILL haven't figured this out...What I really need is a diagram of vacuum Under the dash. Does anyone know where I could find such a thing?

Alright now it's even worse. It was playing this game where it would work on defrost one day then the next it wouldn't at all. About 2 weeks ago it just quit working altogether. I can flip every switch any which way and nothing. Is this a bad control unit? maybe a bad heater resistor? its in the negatives as a high here in iowa and man is it cold to not have heat. Please help guys!

Also if I'm driving and leave it on anything but OFF and flip it from cold to hot or vise-versa it will make a very faint noise kind of like a grinding sound or a switching sound.
