took my contour to have the transmission tested for codes. the codes are p0732 and p0734. po732 is gear 2 incorrect ratio and same with p0734 4 incorrect ratio. gonna cost me between 2k and 2,500 to have it rebuilt. i though about goin on ebay and getting a refurbish one for $850 or go to the junk yard and find a low mileage contour. my question is does the transmission from an escape, focus, escort the 2.0 will work?

You can also get those codes from a bad MLPS (manual lever position sensor). It is also know as the range sensor. In years past before computer controlled transmissions it was also known as the neutral safety switch.

The MLPS is on the transmission where the shift cable attaches. It tells the computer which gear has been selected. One of the ways they fail can cause the computer to see a different gear than is actually selected.

You should try replacing the switch before pulling the trans. Even if you do end up getting the trans rebuilt, it would be wise to replace the MLPS, so do it first and see what happens.

Try replacing the sensor, if that doesn't work...Forget a rebuild and forget the used tranny for $850. You can buy a new Tranny from SP/Bat for like $895 or something. Brand. Spanking. New.

BAT sells mtx's where as he would be looking for an atx

ok so i bought the top transmission shift sensor located on top the the transmission i put it in my car and still was doin the samething running on 1st and 3rd gear. i was also told by someone this shift range sensors has to be calibrated? anyone know about this?

If your backup lamps work in R and the starter cranks in both P and N, it's adjusted. There is no "calibration" either needed or possible beyond making certain the above alignment is correct.

Again, you need to have a COMPLETE and PROPER diagnostic done on this tranny as I previously suggested. Now you're just throwing money at it and hoping you get lucky. Just reading codes isn't enough.

The service manual has the exact procedure to checking hydraulic pressures and electrical circuits to provide for a pinpoint diagnosis. It needs to be followed to arrive at the correct solution.

Based on your symptoms, one of the following is the problem: Shift solenoids, valve body, or the intermediate/OD servo/band/oil circuit. In any event, the tranny will have to be opened to make the repair. In-vehicle repair might be possible, depends on the exact pinpoint diagnosis.

If you buy that $850 rebuilt from the ebay vendor, you will get what you pay for. It's unlikely that a tranny rebuilt for that price will have quality parts and procedures used in the process. As for the other models that also use the CD4E, be advised that, just because it's a CD4e, they are not all the same.

ok so i talked to a guy from service department at ford he said on the transmission shift range sensor thats located on top of the transmission has to be calibrated witch means i put it in cause they charge an arm and a leg to install, after that i take it in to ford and have them reset the transmission computer im guessing so that the computer will not think it still has the old sensor and everything will be shifting back to normal he says. im willing to blow about 200 bucks for the part and reseting the computer.

They're blowing smoke up your tailpipe. There is no "calibration". It's a simple adjustment that is exactly as I previously described. An alignment tool is used that simply presets the TRS into the proper position. The same adjustment can be done manually without the tool and the end result must be the same.

Pay attention, son..... The MLPS (TRS) CANNOT cause your symptoms. You most likely have an internal failure.

Put the tranny in manual 2nd and see if the tranny engages and runs in second. This is a non-electrically controlled gear selector setting (as is reverse) and should work correctly even with the MLPS disconnected. If 2nd gear does not work in manual 2nd, the tranny is broken.

Hey, it's your money, waste it if you want to.

i put it in second from park and i can feel it goin into gear. when i hit the passing gear thecar goes into neutral. when i down shift cause im driving on ice in the mountains goin down hill i feel it goin in most of the time but sometimes it doesnt goe into second when i down shift. i really think its an sensor because i drove the car like this for 3k miles driving to work 20 to 40 miles one way.
i talked to mr jenkins he told me it should be the tss sensor on the side of the transmission that could be causing this so i replaced it myself and disconnected the battery for 2 hours.

I dunno about your car, but with mine, when I put it into 2nd it still goes into 1st but wont go any higher than 2nd gear.

i did this

i pulled over i started off in first then put into second and as im still goin it's still in 1st. i have put it into second from a stop and i can feel it goin in. my passing gear wont kick in sometimes if it does it goes into neutral.
