If you do not have the common broken band then this is the other most common failure of the Contour CD4E.

It's ugly but unfortunately way too many of them end up this way. I do not necessarily agree that the pressure regulator got worn to do this, it can happen even if the valve is not worn. The edge of the first cylinder he picks up breaks off because the groove has cracks in it right out of the box on a brand new part, it will not last forever like that. If you are spending big money to rebuild one of these then you should demand a brand new forward/coast/direct cylinder be installed. If not and a used one installed, the fuse for another blowup could be very short indeed.

There is a modded cylinder that is much stronger but just try to find it.....................
