I am getting a used HMS trans with quaife. I have read countless times about the necessity for shimming and such when changing the differential. Now, I will NOT be opening the trans, just pulling it off of a blown motor and bolting it to mine. Is there any shimming or preloading that must be done or is that reserved for only when disturbing the differential within the case?

Thanks.

you wont have to do anything. if you were to swap differentials, most fwd dont get shimmed. they just slip into place because of how they are set up. on rwd, thats different. you have to preload differential and pinion bearings. you have to dial it in within manufacturer specs so it has its best track, and depending on the use of it, noise.

Adam, I would hop over to FCO and contact Terry directly, I am sure he has a written history on that transmission and could suggest what is best to do
