Camshaft Oil Seals - Which Direction to Install?

I'm replacing the camshaft oil seals on a 98 Contour Zetec, and they appear to be able to be inserted and seal in either direction. Before you say "the same way they came out", they were already removed on this project car so that's not an option. So, which way do new camshaft oil seals get inserted: flat side in towards the engine block head, or spring side in? The flat-side out gives a nice wide rim to drift the seal in, but the spring-side-out had a decent lip for the seal also.

The shop CD doesn't specifiy in enough detail also.
