Brake light issue on 96 Zetec ATX contour

Hey ya'll,
I have a friend that just bought a 96 'tour from her brother and she's got a funky issue with the rear brake lights. The brake lights won't come on with the exception of the third/high-mount light, but they come on when you turn the turn signal on. So essentially, the lights work for everything but braking. Someone told her to go buy a new multifunction switch for $90, but I'm not convinced that's the problem yet.

Yeah, we checked the fuses just to make sure, but they were all good

im in the same boat. my sisters contours light work but the brake but all other signals and the third brake light is still working. We replaced the relay on the steering colum and the switch by the brake peddle. we dont what is wrong with it.
