Bearing noise?

My filter on my 3L turbo was 5 or 6 inches from the ground... went through a foot deep puddle, sucked water in the engine, bent #1 piston rod.

I've been told that some cold air intake systems have a water
separator / diverter valve to prevent accidential water overload.
I wish I knew how it worked.
 
its a foam/thick filter material piece between the filter and the MAF.. if you submerge the filter in water, it can't suck air, and then the foam piece is the point of least resistance so it gets air from there, instead.
