Disclaimer: This is just something I thought about a day or so ago. I have no idea if it makes sense or not.

I've heard of some cars using two turbos - a small one for quick spooling at low RPMs and a larger one to take over at high RPMs.

Is it possible (or does it exist) to have a compressor with dual "fans" inside. One light, small-bladed unit that would spin up quicker and a heavier, larger-bladed unit that would spin up slower, but push - or compress - more air into the engine? I hope this makes sense.

The idea I have in my head is two compressor fans - one behind the other. I don't know which should be in front and which should be in back, but has this been attempted? Also, they'd have to function with the other fan in the way, so that could be a hindrance.

Let me try to diagram this in ASCII:

----------------------> \\ -------\ -------
entering air ---- large fan -- small fan

or vice-versa.

Might be a useful idea; might not. Let me know what you think.
