The struts and weight are a real issue with the Mister Two. But, with a FULL prep to mitigate those, it's got the mid-engined advantage. It'll never be an every-course winner, but even a Miata can't keep up with the MR2 in transitions.

Or maybe I'm just a sucker for MR layout cars. It doesn't seem right that a FF Civic should be faster!
