I've got 2 photoshops of the pre-98 done. They both have the stock taillights intact. One has the lip spoiler as an optional piece that could be attached via a thin strip of double sided adhesive, the other has the lip molded in as part of the trunk.
Nothing really seems to look right (to me) if you take the inner tails out. The overall design of the car is very "bubbly" and to suddenly cut the taillights in half just looks odd to me.
Unfortunately, my host is acting up...again. So I can't post them until my host is back up, or someone else can put them up.
