I understand the reason for having a heat shield. My question is: if I don't relocate the battery, the area around the air filter is pretty tight. If I make a heat shield that basically surrounds the filter with very little clearance, will that restrict air flow into and around the filter? Or will the air flow be faster because the area is restricted?

I also was wondering that. I'm currently designing my own just to see how I could do it. I started with cardboard and ducttape like so many others on the forums, and I'm trying to decide the best placement for the shield. So far my friends and I have figured that over the top of the filter isnt needed as long as a shield closest to the engine goes high enough to touch the heat shielding on the hood. then also have the shield go as far as the battery, and as far as you can on the other side to touch the strut tower, then bring the shield over to the side of the car. I'll post a pic if i can of what we're working on. Having that little of space really shouldnt be an issue, hopefully having something like the kkm where it hooks up into the snorkle can bring in more air. If the shield goes over the filter though that might be too close. Sorry for the ramble

There was a good post about this that has died, heatshield prototype is what it's called. Read it. Mine doesn't even seal to the hood and I notice a more crisp throttle on average which i am attributing to the PCM not pulling timing due to warmer air. This is not necessarily a gain mod, it is a gaining back what was lost mod. And I'm pretty sure it's back for the most part. Just a butt dyno though. One thing's for sure, the shield makes it a hell of a lot louder. Feel the bass!

What kind of heatshield do you have? Pics? I have read a lot of the post you referred to, a great help it was on designing my own.

What are you planning on making the heat shield out of? I used a marine battery box that was pretty thin and does not close the space off that much, just enough to keep some of the hot air behind the filter out. I used a tube from the front grill (similar to the bat setup, just not connected to the filter) that runs to the heatshield area. While driving it keeps some cooler air in the heatshield area.

It's not the prettiest, but a) it serves it's purpose marginally well, and b) it was only $3 and a few hours of free labor.

Black plastic trash can with self adhesive foam pipe insulation around the top. Total cost: $5.

There is about 1.5" of space between the filter and the shield.

Currently mine is a cardboard one...just because I havn't fabricated it yet. Any suggestions on what material? So far mine resembles JohnnySVT's the most. People have suggested aluminum and plastic ive seen, but what did you use?

I believe JohnnySVT used a black plastic trash can as well.

Mine started out as a white trash can though...
