Well, the corrosion issue is present regardless of the type of foam. After owning an 87 Acura Intergra and having the floor and sunroof rot out, and putting two (!) floors in my 85 300zx, I am paranoid about the stuff.

As for the issue of the rocker panels, it should work. Ford did this to the Mustang for 1999 to stiffen and quiet the car.

I wish Demon would have been able to give me the info on the exact foam he used, because it apparently did make a difference for him.

And I agree, we should not sour over a difference of opinion. Let's throw water on these flames we're sending back and forth! Truce?

The links are the same ones that Todras found in the first posting I found.

Ok, Dion, thanks for that. I read through all of them and they addressed most of my questions/concerns. Remaining questions are:

* what about injecting foam into the A/B/C pillars? They provide the torsional strength and foaming them would have great payback.
* what foam in HD did Demon use with succss?
* AutoSeal foam is $180/5 pack, the project referred in the article used about 5 packs. Looking for less expensive alternative here.

Has anyone that has done this mod have any input?

Uni-frame rails... sorry I didn't spell it out perfectly for you. Just look under your car, it's pretty easy to see where to inject it.

We're cool Phil, sorry. I don't have the rust worry so if I use the wrong stuff, then it was just a failed project and not a big deal. I just can't see spending a whole bunch of money for something that will barely do anything on a street car.

And to the thread starter, you're really good at keeping stuff on topic. I hope to see you posting more.

My only interest in this topic right now is finding what Demon used as I have yet to find it. After I know what to get, then I will be doing this "modification" shortly afterwards. Otherwise I'll probably just try Great Stuff.

Chill out, it was a simple question.

I think we are getting closer to our answers. This mod is on my to-do list. But as with most people, I'd like to have as much information as possible before plunging in. Here are my thoughts in no particular order:

* get foam from HD, most dense, max hardness I could find
* have car on jack stands, take load off the wheels
* strip interior plastic trims from the pillars
* wear gloves!
* inject foam from bottom through visible holes
* inject into - subframe, rails, rockers
* move to inside and inject into pillars
* avoid seat belt mechanisms in the b-pillar!
* look around trunk area for opportunities
* let foam harden overnight before loading suspension
* enjoy??!!!

In the SCC article, I noticed that they masked everything as well. As noted, this stuff is really quire permanent when dry.

Another thing to note is to be sure that you check for any drain hoses, wiring et al before injecting the foam. Lastly, clean out the area being injected if at all possible. Road grime and dirt can get into everything, and can hamper the foam's ability to do its job.

More on this from Terry Haines:

"Phil,
Do not use the building grade foams on you body main
chassis rails. If you want to use the correct stuff go
to www.duramix.com ,I think you will find #4330 Pillar
foam will meet your needs as it provides reinforcement
,but use as directed ,this stuff only takes 10 seconds
to rise....Regards TH,Haines Motor Sports Inc."

I read the duramix website focusing on the pillar foam. I don't understand Terry's recommendation( despite his well know expertise ). The foam is 'semi-rigid' and used for 'partial reinforcement'.

So why the apprent half-way step recommendation from Terry? And why negative recommendation of the Home Depot foam? Inquiring minds want to know..,

Probably cuz Terry is being a umm, wimp about doing the foam. Of course you don't wanna go too strong, but no reason to go weak with something that isn't much more than sound deadening material.

Check out the other contour site for some more information on this, TH goes more into detail over there. Great Stuff shouldn't be used for frame stiffening and the pillar foam may actually be plenty strong enough. TH says it is, and he's seen it first hand so I reckon it is. Though I'm guessing there could be something stronger though it may not be worth the extra cost.
