New custom exhaust with 2.25" flex pipe, magnaflow cat, dual delta flow 60 series flowmaster mufflers. I am experiencing a zinging around the flex pipe and cat. There doesn't seem to be any exhaust leak and it is all new pipe. Another contour owner is experienceing the same problem so he changed his flex pipe to 3" and it reduced the sound slightly. The zinging only happens during 25% and up acceleration. If anyone has some input or suggestions feel free to let me know. Thank you.

Zinging as in a metallic vibration zing?

Not an exhuast leak kinda zing sound?

If it's a metallic zing, it could be a harmonic vibration. I wonder if a metal strap, around the flex pipe would stop it, you know the kind that tighten around our radiator hoses.

I'm just wondering if a large enough one, not too tight, would cancel any harmonic vibrations or zing.

Just a thought..... I don't have a flex pipe so I could be way off here.

Good luck

I'm the other one with the zing.

The zing for me is caused by the exhaust gases rushing over the ribs inside the flex pipe.
Like blowing into a bottle.

Chris at CTA Motorsports threw his thoughts in:

"Now about your exhaust whistle, last shot, remove your y-pipe and put a MTX optimzed y-pipe
and reuse your converter, ditch the crappy flex joint
in favour of the ball and socket joint."

Not sure if you have an ATX or MTX I would like to know.
The MTX doesn't use a flex pipe.

Here's a pic of my setup.

My car is an ATX. Is there anyway to replace the flex pipe and put something in its place?

Based on that Chongos explanation & my experience, you'll only need to mod your Y pipe to get the desired result. Check out Warmongers web site for his pictures of a modded Y that will show you the restriction.

This is a mod you'll want to do anyway for the performance benefit - it's better than an aftermarket Y from ShoShop or MSDS. Combine it with headers & you're really in business.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Nope , it's there to prevent the engine movement from twisting the exhaust components

Wrong. He can replace the flex pipe with a ball-n-socket type joint from the early SVTs. I have one on my car, but it was just a temporary fix from a road debris mishap. I hate it and will switch it out as soon as I can find time to repair my stock Y & cat combo.
