Without pulling the head, what is the best way to replace valve stem seals?

If you have an air compressor and adapter to hold the valves up, all you need is a valve spring compressor.
Just remove the cams and buckets, and of course keep all parts protected and sorted so there are no mixups as to which bolt, cap, or bucket went where.
Get a manual. Fairly straight forward procedure.
May also want to replace the timing belt, tensioner, and water pump while you're at it.

I just had the head rebuilt and I'm very sure they used the wrong seals. I have the correct seals and would rather do it myself. Of course the machine shop will put them in for me if I bring the head back in but I don't want to buy another expensive gasket set if I don't have to. Most the spring compressors I've seen are the C-clamp style and the others I've seen won't fit into the valve spring pocket. Do you know where I can get the correct compressor?

Well, I got the cams off and started pulling the old seals out. By old I mean they were purchased on 1-10-04 but they look like the were 30 years old. The tops fell right off. They are Fel-Pro SS72873 which are the right ones for my model which is the early 96. I'm putting the later 96 seals in as they look better and are Viton rubber. What a PIA! Damn car was smoking pretty bad on start up and using oil like crazy which it never did before. Now I know why.

Well, I got it all back together and no smoke on startup. Funny how easy it all goes together on the second time around. BrittB

Are you taking any pics? I'm opening up my engine a bit and am unfamiliar with what I am looking for or see.

No pictures but it really does look just like the book. If you have to pull the head, be sure to get a new timing belt too. Then, once you install it, rotate the crank two complete revolutions and recheck the marks. Don't be surprised if they are off. Try, try, try again.
