The Mondeo that most of CEG has been longing for is on its way out in Europe, so quit asking "When is it coming to the US??" and "Why..?" 4. "Escort was better than the Focus"???? Hardly, it was slow, boring, and did I mention slow? 5. "Taurus is one of Ford's good cars" ????? It is ready for the graveyard. Been virtually the same since 1986. 6, Finally, the 2000 model year was the last of the Con-tiques. And only the Contour SE was "fleet only". There were SVT's, SE Sports, and Mystiques available at dealers that year.
GRR! Beat me to it!
#6 though, my 2000 SE was not a fleet vehicle. It's not a sport, just another ATX v6.
I also saw a 500 a couple weeks ago, and it is way bigger than my 2000 Contour and even dwarfs my mom's 2000 Taurus.

I read an aticle in the past weeks Houston Chronicle auto section about the 500. It is inbetween the size of the Taurus and the Crown Vic on the outside, nearly Crown Vic size on the inside, and a trunk the same size as the Town Car with a weight of about 5500 pounds. This article listed the 3.0L Duratec as the only engine for the car. That didn't seem right to offer a car of this weight with the 3.0 as the only engine, offering the 3.5 as an option makes more sense, but then again, it is Ford.

k, so the 500 is bigger than it looks...
btw, the new Mondeo (2001 or whatever +) is way bigger than the old mondeo/contour/mystique; well, maybe not a whole lot, but it´s about taurus sized.
someone claimed that the Mondeo/Contour/Mystique shares the same platform as the early nineties Mazda 626. is this a fact or just a rumor?
thx, c.

I'm not too sure the Duratec 35 will be ready when Ford launches the 500 and Montego (Mercury version), I think rather then screw up a launch and rushing developement the company is dragging their feet (i.e. Ford Escape Hybrid).
Anyhow at least it will have a 6 Speed or CVT Transmission, and not that POS 4 Speed CD4E.

WTF!!!! Why does ford need to replace good cars?? Focus replaced Escort, I think escorts were better. Maybe this futura needs to be looked at before I judge it...
Wrong on both accounts. Granted the Escort was a reliable car, there was a change needed for safety and a more rigid platform. The Focus has both and it's reliability is going thru the roof.
The Taurus has less interior room than my Contour, a wallowing platform and is in dier need of a new look!

I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment

labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Correct, the "good" cars mentioned above are outdated. Ford 500 production begins July 12th here in Chicago for fall sales. The CDW27 platform for our Contours is not related to the same year Mazda 626. And officially 2000 Contour SE's were "fleet only", meaning fleet customers, from rentals to company cars. But dealers could order one for a retail customer if they wanted it. Anf finally, the answer to "Why/when is the Euro Mondeo coming?" NEVER! Look for the Lincoln Zepher/Mercury M???/Ford F??? coming spring 2005!

Biggest in the industry for a car of that size, is what it probably said. What I read is that it is exactly the same size as the Town Car trunk. Also, the CVT (transmission) has no shift points and will have more available power and torque through the entire range of rpm's and higher end models will be available in AWD.
