Hey All,

Not sure if there is one or not, but I'm looking for info before I confront my Ford dealer.

Last time I had the car in, I had them do an oil change for me, and when they did it they charged me for a new plug. I wasn't happy, but whatever, it was done.

So this weekend a bunch of us NECEGers got together for a meet. While I was there, I planned on tuning up the car, including an oil change. Well wouldn't you know that "new" oil plug was put on with a air gun and won't budge! I tried using a few different 13mm wrenches, added extensions for leverage, and couldn't get it to budge! I even began to strip the bolt.

Needless to say, I'm not happy about it. A new plug is already stripped. So I'm trying to arm myself with knowledge before confronting the dealer.

Is there a specific torque spec on the oil plug?

Elky even let me borrow a 13mm Flare Wrench that was grabbing on all 6 sides, and it was still stripping.

Thanks in Advance.

Would probably help to have the pan warm if it wasn't. Another reason I do my own oil changes. Why does everyone feel the need to wrench on it? Should always be hand tightened with a box end or socket wrench. I'd guess about 8-11 lbs.

I don't know the spec off the top of my head, but I can check it when I get to work today if you'd like. I should have it posted back here about 11pm cst or so if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Yup. The only time I've ever had problems removing the drain plug or oil filter is when a car is new or has been taken to a shop (dealer or not) for an oil change. It takes me twice as long, when I have to beat on a wrench just to get that bolt out, too

I agree. I'm looking for the specific Ford spec to bring them and say, "Hey, you guys didn't follow your work procedure"

Maybe someone can look it up on their Service Manual CD or something for me.

My mom normally had the oil in her '93 Taurus done at the local Havoline center. Apperantly they botched the threads and used and over sized plug in the pan. When they shut down she took it to Wal-mart to have it done and they wouldn't do it because the pan was so messed up. In short some places just don't care.

Hey Zack:

Per Ford CD - torque for oil pan drain plug = 26 Nm or 19 ft. lbs.

That thing has soooo many threads there is no reason to ever overtorque it. I just go hand tight with no final "make sure it's tight" tug. Never a problem.

Yeah, similar, but not quite. Just like the oil filter. Absolutely no need to crank that either. Hand tight. Period. That thing has a ton of threads too.
