When it slips.

You will usually notice it in a higher gear when you get on it and the RPMs jump but the car does not.

There was a test that I did on my Focus (2001, 80k mi). I don't see why there would be a difference with the Contour. Anyway, my point is coming. One test is if it slips. The actual test in the Ford manual goes as follows:

1. Lock wheels and put on parking brake.
2. Start engine and engage fourth gear.
3. Run the engine at approx. 2000 rev/min.
4. Release clutch pedal slowly.

Does the engine stall when the clutch pedal is fully released?
If yes, then your clutch is OK. My Contour failed. Hope this helps.

Go with Rogerm60 on this. The problem with 99CSVT's procedure is that it's like the test for rabies. A definitive diagnosis requires the death of the patient.

Best bet is to go WOT at least once every day That way when it's close to being dead, you'll feel it slip (VERY noticeable jump in RPM's with no increase in MPH).

Once you feel it slip you have maybe 1-2 weeks of NO WOT VERY CAREFUL driving to fix it or end up stranded somewhere.

Seriously, from 1st major slip of mine I got about 3 weeks of "extra" driving to gather parts and plan for the repair.

Ok lets add to this just alittle bit so how many of you still have your factory clutch and how many miles are on it.It may not be a bad idea to include any mods that you may have that have increased hp or tq

Anyone ever have trouble getting their car in gear when stopped? It has no problem going into gear when moving or when the engine is off. But if I start it and try to put it into gear it is difficult. I can put it in 5th, then 3rd and fist it into 1st, but I have to turn off the car to get into reverse. This only happen about 50% of the time, sometimes it goes in gear without incident.
