i am replacing the heads on my dads, '95 4 runner v6. i had a mishap and the cam gears rotated before i had a chance to set the #1 piston to top dead center when tearing everything down. i have the piston at tdc now and the cams are aligned with the timing marks. i need to know if there is a way to be sure that the piston is coming up on the compression stroke. does it matter since the cams are not attached with the timing belt? as long as #1 is at tdc can i go ahead and install the belt with the cams aligned with the marks and be ok.

Wow dude, yeah, TDC is TDC. Only the cams relation to TDC matters. The cams control what stroke it's on.
