Just bought a 1998 SVT and am looking for tires. Im looking for under $80 per if possible. The choices are:

205/55R/16
Sumitomo SRIXON4 (HR) - $63
Sumitomo HTR+ (VR) - $65
Kumho Ecsta ASX (WR) - $70
Yokohama AVID V4s (VR) - $80

all from Tirerack. Can anyone recommend any of these from experience? Thanks...

Hi gliderjoe,

Welcome to the forums!

Please try posting in the tires forum, much better place for your tire question.

I'd go with the Yokohamas. Though I love my contiextremes, I can't really recommend them as the yokos will outlast them, and are rated better (in that size anyways). They're also a $1 less than the contis. My next choice would be the kumhos, but still the yokos are much better. Definitely don't get H rated tires, unless you're broke.

I'm extremely happy with my Dayton Daytona ZR tires.

http://www.bridgestonetire.com/dpp/

They are the best tire I have had on the car.

Dayton is a Bridgestone brand. They were nearly $100.00 each. A friend purchased a set of Kuhmo 712 tires at nearly the same time, and they are not wearing nearly as well.

They are definitely a better tire than the Goodyear Eagle GS-C tires the car came with and also much better than the Continentals or the BF Goodrich TA g-Force KDWS tires that I had on it since then.

By the way, I have 225/50R16 size tires on it which size I have used since replacing the original 205/55R16 tires.

Thanks Jim, are you happy with the 225's? Do you recommend the wider version for handling?

I'd go with these: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compare1.jsp?startIndex=0&width=215%2F&ratio=50&diameter=16&search=true&pagelen=20&pagenum=1&pagemark=1&manufacturer=Kumho&x=14&y=11

A wider tire doesn't give you a bigger contact patch, you need a bigger (wider) wheel for that. A wider tire just changes the shape of the contact patch from more oblong to more wide. The area will stay the same.

I have the Kumho ASX's on my 17"s and I'm very happy with them. Read the review I wrote about them a couple weeks ago; a good driftin story, too.
