I somewhat wrecked my SVT this past weekend. It was a 2000 Ford Contour SVT with 49,850 miles on it.
From what I can guess, this is the list of damages:
Two air bags New windshield Fix/repaint front bumper New wheel New tire Any type of axel/suspension work Frame adjustment (passenger door and sunroof stuck) New fog lights Alignment
From this list, I would assume the car would be a total loss, especially with labor. Don't you think so? My insurance company left me a voicemail telling me they didn't think it was.
Brief summary of what happened:
I was driving in the middle lane. Someone moved into my lane from the left. To avoid him I moved quickly to the right lane and in my need to get out of the way, the darkness, and the excessive rain, I didn't notice it was a right turn only lane and went through the green light at about 30mph without a lane to go into. Therefore, I basically hit the curb almost head on. The worst damage I saw was the right front wheel which was perpindicular to the car. It was about 2am when all this happened?
fun, huh?

Sounds like a total to me. Unless you've got a hook up on used parts and cheap labor. Has an insurance adjuster actually looked at the car?

They said they did. I'm guessing they didn't try the doors or notice the sunroof, which is my main evidence for the frame being damaged.

The same thing happened to me on my way to school. A bit diff though. Some kid in an old pickup started moving from the center lane to the far left lane while I was 1/2 past him. Funny part was he was passing me as he decided to move, so he must have known I was there. I moved all the way into the emergency run off and honked my horn (glad I got a new one in there...). He moved back, and I floored it past him. (sorry to hi-jack the thread) People need to pay attention, get off the cell phones, and DRIVE!!!
Sorry to hear about the car though. Any thoughts of what you'll replace it with if it does get totalled? (Side Frame adjustments aren't cheap)

The contour doesn't have a "frame", but the doors not opening and the sunroof being stuck indicates that the entire unibody is twisted.
I spent over $2000 on my front suspension a while back, with all stock parts, just putting things back together after a curb jumped out in front of me. With the sinking value of contours, I would say anything more than that would be a total loss.
I would say that you're probably looking at a totalled car, but you never know.
don't drink and drive.

It doesn't have a chassis frame like a "body on frame" car/truck, but the basic uni-body structure can be called "the frame".

late reply I know, but what I'm hearing is encouraging in that I'm right, but I don't really want to total my car out. I just sent in a 6k check two weeks ago to pay it off. Oh well. The insurance company keeps telling me they're going to fix it, but they haven't told the dealer that and I'm almost positive they haven't checked the fram/uni-body/chassis/whatever.
Thanks for the input guys.

Air bags cost about $600 a piece. I had to have them replaced about a year ago on my Stang after my son had a little incident.

The reason there's so much ignorance is that those who have it are so eager to share it.
