Just to update everyone on the sunroof gears. I talked to the manufacturer last night after he received the gear. It is a little more complex than he thought it would be, but he is still very confident he can make it for us. We should have a test gear done next week and once that is done, I will provide pricing and ordering information. I plan to do a group buy at a set price per individual gear with multiple gears ordered by one person elegible for even greater savings.

Thanks,
Rick

That sounds like very good news.

Is this going to be a one time run of gears or will he be continuing to make gears as needed later?

I have not had the problem yet but if it is a one time thing I would get one now rather than wait until I do.

I plan to buy and make some available for later on, but the price will go up as with all group buy pricing. They will be a semi-limited production item.

Thanks,
Rick

Hey Rick, just what goes wrong with the sunroof? So far, mine has been doing fine. Is this something that preventive maintenance should take care of or it is something that will probably happen regardless? I changed the water pump to prevent gettin stuck somewhere, should I do the same with the sunroof gears? Thanks (and thanks again for the continuous great service and the super powdercoating jobs).

Make sure I am on the list... I don't want to be overlooked... Also, this gear is gonna be plastic, not metal, right? (Though I'd prefer metal I'd take her either way.)

The plastic gear that is driven by the shaft of the electric motor melts or strips and the sunroof becomes inoperable. Currently, you have to replace the whole unit at about $200.

Preventetive maintenance should help increase the life expectancy of the gear as the increased resistance from an unlubed track will increasse the strain put on the gear.

Thanks,
Rick

What type of lube would be appropriate here? Can I just put some white lithium grease on the track?
