I can't remove my key from my 97 ATX Contour. It will start the car when I want to park, I cannot turn it back past ACC. as a result,I can't remove the key. And as an added bonus, the battery runs down since the the key remains in the ACC position. Is this a problem with the steering locking mech. or is it from the transmission lock out switch(the one the only lets you start the car from P or N) My gut says it is the steering column locking device. What do i do? Where do I look to fix this. Thanks

Maybe too simple, but did you try wiggleing the gear selector in park while removing the key?

I could pull my key out of the ignition when I was driving the car! I don't know about yours but if yours is the same then crank up the car. Take out the key and use just the tip to shut the car off.

Yeah,I tried the jiggle technique. I got it to come out once, but something is up. I don't want to chance it ripping out out with force. Nor do I want to go to the stealer-ship. Suggestions? Thanks

Possibly the key removal inhibit solenoid (located on steering column) is not having its feed interrupted by the transmission lever position sensor (located in console), try pulling fuse 34 interior fuse panel to see if key can be removed.

Yep, make sure when you turn the car off, make sure you cant shift, if the shift selector is able to move, theres your problem, also if that fails, unplug the battery, i know that will let the key come out.

Try removing the console around the shifter. There is a switch in front of the shifter that tells the key solenoid that the shifter is in Park. Make sure the switch is seated in the holder.

My daughter had this problem. The switch is plastic (suprise)and the ears that hold it in broke. You can get a new switch or glue it back in.

Take the shroud off and use a paper clip in the retaining hole to pull the lock cylinder out.
Take it in somewhere well lit and work on it.
