Doing some research. From experience, what kind/brand of helmet do you recommend?

Derek- Get one that is Snell 95 or Snell 00 rated. The Snell95 is about to expire, so I would go with Snell 00.
The helmet I have is a full face, with face shield. I paid about $150 for mine early last year. I forget the brand of hand. Try searching, if you haven't already, in the archives. I remember several big threads about helmets.

Thanks again, Mike. Some of those places have great deals! The I was actually looking at a Bell Star I or a Star II. Will these helmets be good for motorcycles, too? Not that I have a motorcycle now...but who knows what the future will hold.

Yep. I got my Bell this spring for about $110 IIRC. I got a motorcycle helmet because I plan on buying a bike within the next couple years, so it is a pretty good two birds, one stone kinda deal.
Peace

The "M" helmets should suit you for autocross and most high-speed, non-competitive track days.
I think Solo I requires an SA rated helmet, as would any track event that involves actually competing with other cars that are on track at the same time as you. The SA's have nomex liners, and are built to a slightly different standard with regards to sustaining multiple impacts (as you would experience bouncing around inside a rollover vehicle) and the size of the eye opening (in full face helmets.)
I'm a firm believer in full-face helmets, even in a closed cockpit.
So, think about what you want to do over the next few years, and check the sanctioning body rules before you buy.
Function before fashion.

In my experience on track events will not allow m helmets. Although this can be solved by borrowing a friends helmet when you go through tech, just remember, it's your ass though.
