My son told me his temp guage quit working the other day. Co-incidentally he told me this was after he had jump started some one's car for them. Any ideas? I don't see how it could have messed that up. 95 zetec.

could be the temp. sender unit. it is threaded into the thermostat housing.
there are 2 of them, one for the ECU (the one pointing up) and the one driving the gauge (pointing down).
I'd tap the thermostat housing / sensor and reconnect the wires to sort out contact problems - if it doesn't help, a new sender is cca. $20 and easy to replace.

I've seen other people have problems after jump starting someone's car. Our electrical systems are designed for it real well I guess. I've given many jump starts and have received two though without any problems. If it's not the sender/sensor, then you could have a short somewhere else.

Well it was the sending unit. What a PITA to get at. Multiple hoses, no room to work etc. Oh well it's done. Kind of weird co-incidence. Jumping another car could not have made it fail.

One could jumper out the two leads on the connector to the LOWER temp sending unit (see above) and the needle should shoot over to the extreme right side of the guage when switched on at ignition key. If needle doesn't respond, problem is most likely in the temp sending unit itself.

This should have read if needle DOES respond, then problem is most likely in the temp sending unit itself. If the temp gauge needle DOES NOT move, when jumpered at connector as described above, then the prob is in the guage or wiring to same. SORRY for the error.
