I have a problem with my moonroof. First it worked but when you go to shut it from being put all the way back it is supposed to automatically stop and then if you want it to move in the "up" position you would have to click it again. Well it was closing and then after it closed it would automatically open in the "up" position. Well as time went on (period of maybe 1-2 weeks) it sometimes completely stops working. Now it barely works at all. Can anyone shed any light on this problem for me. I am hoping I do not have to replace the motor because as anyone knows these cars are so expensive to fix. Thnaks! -Adam

When my automatic stop, stopped, it was the first step in the road to motor replacement. BTW that's dead easy to do and a new motor from Bill Jenkins is about ~$250 IIRC.

Really? So it is easy to do? You are talking to someone who had to take 2 days to put a CD player in a car. $250? Thats not too bad, I heard someone paid over $800 to have Ford fix their moonroof. Well I am sure labor charges were the cause of that. Thanks for replying to my post. How would you replace the motor?

Everything is accessed via the overhead console. There first step is to pry out the light assembly, see here for that: http://www.contour.org/mods/mods.php?s=howto&displayid=11 And how the rest is mounted... I should add that removing the light assembly gives access to the front tabs w/phillips screws; and hopefully your tabs aren't broken. From here just remove the Torx screws (new ones are provided IIRC), uplug the motor and repeat the whole process in reverse. It's a very simple fix.

Check out www.autopartsoe.com. I asked for the motor Part Number MM-738 according to Motorcraft and AutopartsOE had it for US$ 164.00 An easy replacement.

Most of the info you are looking for is in the FAQ section under common problems. A new motor really isn't hard to put in, I just put my new motor in last week (from Bill Jenkins, which by the way will cost you $200 not $250). When you put the new one in, just make sure the sunroof is in the closed position (that way the sensor/switch in the motor does not get confused). PM me if you have any detailed questions about the install since I just put mine in.

Actually most of the information isn't in the FAQ which is why I took the time to post the pics. As usual, the most difficult part of the repair is determining how to remove the trim pieces without breaking them--hence my pics. How to take off the motor, in contrast, is easliy deduced.
And I'd still like to know more about the relationship between the position of the glass and the motor. If it is necessary that the roof be closed before changing the motor wouldn't this necessitate the motor be in the "closed" position as well? What if it was mistakenly shipped in another position?
