i have a 99 contour se with the 2.5L duratec. i am using 3 to 4 quarts a week. the car is not smoking and it is not leaking a drop. i have a rattle when it starts and when you accelerate . it sounds like the valve train . any ideas where oil is going .

It either leaks out or burns. No place else for it to go. Gould be rings, valve guides. Need to do leak down test to determine cause.

A working cat converter will burn up most oil in the exhaust with a lot of smoke. If the intake valve guides are leaking, the oil gets burnt in the combustion chamber and the rest the cat converter takes care of. However, the extra "fuel" , ie oil, will evebtually cause the cat to overheat and melt.

If if isn't burning, then it is leaking.

yes i know that, but if this has been going for more than a week and a half, the cat would be shot by now. the brick would have shot out of the tailpipe so to speak. something else is going on. maybe its leaking onto the frame of the car?

reason being is a cat is not designed to deal with that kind of emissions. thats a lot of oil. i would check your coolant, if you have oil in it, you have blown a head gasket. traditionally, when head gaskets go, the car emits gray or blue smoke and idles rough but i have heard of cases where there is no smoke, just a significant rise in the amount of oil needed in the engine.

well maybe it is valve guides and thats where my rattle is coming from. it just blows my mind that it uses that much oil. i have been all underneath it and there is not even a moist spot . the car only has 46000 miles on it. i have followed my wife to watch for any smoke and had her drive it hard and nothing . that is why i am so baffled.

well when an engine becomes low on oil things rattle like lifters, for example (they are in the valve train) its quite possible that you have had a head gasket go bye-bye. damn that oil has to be going somewhere, its not going back to the fuel tank as the fuel system is a one way system. hmm...
