Hello all, this is my first post here. I have a '95 Contour with the 2.0 four automatic. The other day as I was driving, the car acted as if it "slipped" out of gear. It would not pull and the engine would just rev. I pulled over to the side of teh road and turned the ignition off and imediately started it back up and put it in gear and it would pull, but only for a couple hundred yards. I did this about four times to get the car home. Any ideas? Oh, btw the fluid level was perfect.
One other thing is that the speedo has been broke for about two months with no driveability problems. Could this somehow have cause the problems with the tranny? since the vss requires input from the speedo?
thanks, Randy

Hey Randy. Welcome.

Did your car have the CEL light on? If so, run to AutoZone & ask them to read the codes. Then post them here for more detailed help.

If not, what does your tranny fluid look like now? Is it burned smelling or brown lookin'? Or is it still a pretty cherry red?

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Welcome onboard.

Early '95 models had mechanical speedo so it's problem may just be a cable problem. Speedo cable is in two sections with joint just inside the engine compartment. If electric speedo you should get it working first since, if it's VSS as you suggest, it may also be affecting atx.

Few DIY in-situ repairs possible with atx, you may wish to get an opinion/estimate at a shop and post info here for guidance. Sounds like possible torque converter problem.

The CEL comes on sporadically. I was under the impression that Autozone could only read codes from '96 up cars.
The fluid still looks cherry red.

Randy,

I had very similar problems/symptoms on my v6 auto and it turned out to be the range
sensor. This is a roughly $35 part that sits on top of the tranny and can be replaced by
draining the cooling system, disconnecting some hoses and removing a couple of bolts.
(Could be easier on the 4 cyl.) Please check the post in transmission forum about
ATX going wacky from about 2 weeks ago to see if this matches you symptoms.

You can get codes on your car yourself. Click on OBD-I links within the FAQ CEL codes FAQ

Hi guys, I found a broken speedo cable, it was broken at the connection to the upper cable. I replaced it, but the car still had the same problems, except that now the speedo works.
A friend of mine had a code reader. I checked the codes and came up with a 332 and 452 codes. According to your site, 452 is there is a problem with the VSS, and 332 means there is a problem with the EGR valve.
Any input? Is there any tests I can perform on the VSS with a multimeter if not, I will try to replace the VSS tomorrow.
Randy
