HI WHEN I START THE 1996 FORD CONTOUR GL 4 CYL A/T OVER 100,000 THE ENGINE RATTLES FOR A FEW SECONDS THE OIL IS NEW AS WELL AS THE FILTER ANY IDEAS?

Sure it isn't a pulley? Tensioner will rattle when it's dying, but mine rattled all the time, not just when I started it.

Zetecs will commonly make this sound when they start just until you get oil moving in the head...Sounds like a tractor when you first start it....now if this begins to get excessive and say, makes the sound all the time....especially on an engine that has received hard use or a lot of where...or miles, it may be time to rebuild the head. Why? Your lifters are rattling, and will need to be replaced.
Other considerations:
When did you last change the oil?
What oil are you using? Who makes? Type and Viscosity?
What oil filter are you using?

my car makes a subtle clacking noise too, but as soon as it warms up, after about 30 secs to a minute, the noise goes away, and its as quiet as a mouse..
well.. i mean, quiet as a zetec anyway..

same thing, cept mine isn't quiet. It's straight pipe exhaust and ZX3 intake.. hehe... vroom

Timing belt can rattle for a brief period after startup.

I had my engine replaced 45000miles back and it has ticked/rattled abit since day one. Still pulls as well as ever though.
