Can I install this using just my bare hands and a pair of pliers? Just kidding. I was just wondering how difficult the install is, or if I should just have the tranny guy at my dealer do it on the side. I would imagine I'll have him do it, but I could use the experience.

I'd have somebody else do it (not saying a ford tech. would be the best person to do it though). The holes that have to be drilled have to be really precise and I think you need a few special tools to measure certain things.

To do it right you have to have air and a way to clean the VB real good. Also, you may be hard pressed to find the VB gasket set. The VB needs to be assembled with the separator plates, gaskets, and accumulator body in precise alignment. There is a tool for this ( I was going to use some long bolts). The actual install is not that difficult but I would recommend getting the CD4E service manual since you have to pull out the valves.
On last thing, the kit comes with a spacer for the 2-3 servo. The directions say to fashion a c-clamp to compress the cover for the installation. Forget it (the c-clamp that is) with my tranny still in the car I used a block of wood and a large lag bolt. I rounded the head of the lag bolt and screwed it into the block of wood. Then place it on the jack and compressed the cover using the jack.
Since my VB had worn bores (needed oversize valves) I ordered a rebuilt and modified VB from transmission exchange company. I would have needed a $300 set of boring bits to install the new valves. The VB was only $275 with exchange.
If you are going to pull the VB with the tranny in the car you have to remove the T-stat housing and associated hoses. Also remove the AC accumulator bracket. And range selector switch or the VB wonâ??t come out.
Good luck
jeff

Thanks for your info guys, I'll probably be letting the tranny guy at work do this, since I don't feel like screwing anything up

mercman,
I spoke to my dealer about doing this and they gave me some cock-a-mamie story
about having to pull the driver's axle to release the valve body.
From your post, it seems as if you didn't have that much of a problem.
Did you take any pics ???
Could you possibly scan the TransGO directions and post them ?
How many miles were on your CD4E before you did the Valve Body rebuild ?

Installation seems to be a big project...Terry Haines told me he'd need the car for a whole day to install it.

I wouldn't say it is a big project. It probably takes 3+ hours alone just to get the valve body out and back in. Once it is out, it probably takes 2 hours to do the cleaning and modifications.

Fastcougar had mentioned that the reason he had not installed his was because he didn't have a "special reamer bit" for one of the mods. The reamer actually puts a angle bore in one of the valve body ports, then you are to insert a special rivet that is included in the kit. This restricts line pressure at a perticular point in the valve body (sorry guys I have no idea where) and allows for a slightly higher, more stable line pressure across all driving conditions.
This step alone is the only reason I did not purchuse the TransGo Kit and Sonnax By-Pass valve myself and do it. Plus, I want the Kevlar composite clutches in there also.
I am not sure if you can purchuse this bit by itself, but I am sure that you can. A little digging in many of the catalogs I have posted over the past several months might help with this. It would be a good idea though to have access to a drill press though, I would think. That way you could make the bore perfectly straight.
Mercman... If you do have the instructions to the CD4Ejr kit and could scan them, that would be GGRRRREAAAAT!!!! If not, let us know and I will be happy to get with the shop that did my repair and get a copy from them.

The VB can be removed with the tranny in the car, no need to pull the axle. It only took a few (2-3) hours to remove it. I can do it faster now that I know what to remove. It took longer to install because the bolts have to be torqued in sequence and there is a lot of them. I will put together a list of whatâ??s needed (tools and what has to be removed) and post it. Sorry for being vague, Iâ??m typing fast because my granddaughter (22 mo) is here and Iâ??m tiring to find struts for the Myst. Iâ??m also going to install a driverâ??s lower control arm tomorrow. I have lots of work this week end (Oh Joy!)
