the waterpumps have plastic propellors (i forgot how to spell today) and they tend to go around 60K miles. you can buy an aftermarket waterpump with metal propellors and install it yourself, it's fairly easy. the nazi part is if you ask a question that has been asked then you will get about a thousand responses that say search, so search and if you can't find anything, then ask.

I am also new to the Contour fold, having just purchased a 99 SE Sport 5 speed Torreador Red/Greystone cloth with 46k, 48k now.. I've noticed that I get the battery light on my instrument panel on occasion while very close to and during red line. Is this normal? I love the car so far, it's been the first manual or FWD car I've had in some time. I used to have a 1988 BMW 535iA before this. The thing I love about the Contour is that it doesn't have leather, and is more fun with the stick. However, I miss the drift factor that the BMW had, that car would slide like mad - Yay Michelin TRX tires! Overall, I am very impressed with the handlin and performance of the contour despite being front wheel drive.

That's a sign of a dying alternator. You should look at getting yours replaced before it starts to really fail and you're stuck somewhere with a dead battery. Replacement can be a challenging task, so you might want to take it in to a shop and have the work done.
