If you have an MTX - yes, you need the friction modifier.
If you have an ATX - you do not need an additive.

Use some Lubeguard for auto transmissions. Many sources, including some OEM swear by it. Get it at Napa.

I must have got the wrong filter then. I have one that is plastic with places for hoses to hook up to it. I really do not think it is inside of the tranny.

Adding an external filter can affect the circulation of fluid, so you want to check the filter flow rate to be sure it's OK for the tranny. The TrickShift blue full synthetic fluid is also a very good replacement for the Mercon fluid and firms up the tranny shifts nicely. I didn't see as much difference with Mobil1 over regular fluid. Note: Use only the full synthetic type, the other stuff is Type F fluid.

Lubeguard is an additive thats supposed to work well. A lot of tranny shops add it to their rebuilds as insurance.
