Please help me out in planning the National Meet. I would like to have the National Meet closer to the west coast this year, to better include those in CA, OR and WA.

I am thinking that there will probably be two National meets per year, one in the Spring on the eastern side (I'm hoping Spring Zing 2001 will be just that meet), and one in the late Summer/Fall on the western side.

This year, the latter will likely be in Colorado, for its "central" location and great driving potential. Is there anyone in CO willing to help plan?

As always, feedback is welcome.

Colorado seems right, I could then get to both the east and the west.

Gotta get busy on the 3.0L Contour.

Searching for the perfect donor cars.

Anybody with a 95-97 Loaded V6 SE with a shot motor and (as good as it gets) 5speed?

Ack then we here in the southern US get left out of the action both times. I consider myself an enthusiast, but driving to CO or IL is a bit far. Anyone for Austin TX? Warm, dry weather in the summer/fall; it's not bad, really. Or how about during the winter? No snow here, I run summer tires year-round...

Yeah, it's tough to include everyone due to geography. I think the best solution might just be to alternate from year-to-year... maybe NE region one year, SW region the next, etc.

And again, Lance, thanks for setting all this up.

Worth a consideration, heh. I'll start looking into it. There's a strong TX SHO following, maybe we can have a joint meet...

Hey Lance,

I'm on the east side of Denver, CO. I live in Aurora. I think it would be great to have a meet here. I'd love to help out in any way I can...I'd also like to able to some CEG members.

Peace,

How about a road rally from Tierra del Fuego,Argentina to Prudhoe Bay,Alaska?? In case of a tie -the person with the most bullet holes in their car and/or documented anal cavity searches by lighthearted border guards wins. Road-killed drivers are elegible for postumous door prizes.

How about california? Pretty central for ya =) great weather, we have some of the higher population of Contour and Cougar owners plus im sure the SHO SHOP could arrange a dyno day and the carlsbad drag strip isn't to far + qualcomm stadium is about 1 hour drive from there (So cal Solo II)... plus if you have it in the fall there is the last open-track session at buttonwillow in sept.

Wow, those places are all pretty far away from Ohio. I highly doubt I would be able to go to Colorado or Texas. I'm thinking a more central location for all of the US (and some from Canada) may be better suited as it is a "National Meet"

My thoughts at least.

I believe a prior meet was held at the Contour birthplace in Kansas City Missouri. That's about as central as it gets. Some of the attendees expressed interest to meet elsewhere next time. I guess the roads weren't twisty enough...

I'm not exactly sure as to where tbe geographical center of the US is but, we could always vote on it or something, I suppose that's the democratic thing to do =P

Kansas City is central, but it is not a very exciting place for a National Meet. Twisty roads are a requirement now =)

We are not going to please everyone, but that is life.

How about just north of Detroit MI? Ford's hometown. There are always tons of car shows going on around here and it's pretty much a ritual around here. Lots of stuff to do here and then there is always a big cruise every friday and saturday on Gratiot Avenue.

Cool, Iv'e never been to a meeting yet. Pretty new to all this but I would love to attend if the meeting is in CA, I live in Las Vegas so CA isn't that far for me. But TX or CO would be pushing it. So if one's going to be in CA, count me in for sure!!!

Lance,
I would love to help out for a national meet in Colorado. I live in Highlands Ranch, which is about 15 miles south of Denver. I already have a few ideas on how I could help, and I am sure some of the other Colorado CEG members will do whatever they can (if they are not in touch with you already). I've never been involved with one of these before, so send me a list of activities you want do have, things you need help with, and any other specs that you have, and we can get the ball rolling on this. Go ahead and contact me by email at jeffgingras@hotmail.com.

Lance,

I'd be as happy as a clam in mud if the meet was in Colorado. In fact, I think that Jeff and I would be glad to get involved in the planning and organizing of the meet here. Lots of good twisties and other fun things to do.

i'd like to go to one of these events, but due to my schedule, even IL is far for me.

Lance: is it possible to also have something in NE this summer? in addition to thenational meet? just so some folks can get a taste of the contour spirit. i'm not sure who to contact about this or if there are any tracks in this area which would let amateur groups drive their cars around.

i guess, email me if you're interested and we'll work from there...?

Ditto the concerns about time off, gotta get that scheduled, make sure I'm not on call and best would be a weekend when my wife is "Tin Roof Rusted" Don't like to be around when that happens every 28 days

Cheers,

For those of you who are asking about dates for the 2000 National Meet, try to hang in there. I am going to discuss everything with Eric Linneman (the other Colorado CEG member who is helping me plan) tomorrow. I will make choosing the dates my top priority, but they obviously have to work with the availability of track/dyno/hotel facilities, etc., and I want to run everything by Lance first, so I don't think we will have a date set in stone for another week or two. A very tentative figure would probably be the first or second weekend of September, most likely a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We are going to work very hard to make this an enjoyable event for all the members. I will post the actual dates as soon as they become final, and more detailed information will follow as soon as it becomes available.

I'm assuming we're set on Colorado. Great by me. As far as dates though, the first weekend in September is Labor Day weekend. Cool because we would all (most anyway) have Monday off, but not so good as traffic on our scenic mountain roads would be awful. And, many members will likely have plans with family etc. that weekend. I'll likely be there regardless, but mountain roads crowded with tourists are less than entertaining. Just something to think about.

My ideas for the event:

I know of several good roads not too far out of Denver (and I'm sure you CO guys know many more), but for a true driving experience, lets pick a day (Sunday early morning would be best) and block off several hours and PLAN a route through Summit county or Leadville or Estes Park or something similar. The CEG events I have attended have all been awesome, but with a little more planning would have been even better. For example, have maps printed up and meeting points along the way so that when people get separated (and they always do!), we can all meet back up and no one gets lost.

Get with the local SCCA chapter possibly (their National HQ is right there in Englewood) and see if they would set up an autocross for us (for a price of course).

Check with that road race track out there (is it called Second Creek?) and see what their rental fee is. Would be really fun to have a track event, although we'd probably have to get $$ up front.

Do the raffle thing like at SpringZing. Everyone brings something, everyone gets something.

Get a banquet room at a 'local' (not a chain) restaurant/bar. Could plan a Saturday night dinner.

Pikes Peak would be another fun day trip, although some of us may be a little too anal to take our cars to the top. It is dusty and bumpy, but then you can say your car has been over 14k feet!

Have commemorative T-shirts and stickers printed up.

Not do a drag race (not a legitimate one anyway!). I've witnessed 2 SVT's break transmissions on drag tracks, and it kind of puts a damper on the weekend for the person whose car is broken (right Tim?!).

That's probably more than most people want to read, so I'll stop for now. If there's anything I can do to help out from KC, just let me know.

Do what???? no drag racing. What do you mean people break things? I have no clue what you are talking about. I want to drag race. I love the feeling of it. I've been practicing. I no longer get wheelhop. So please include drag racing. Besides, I handled it pretty good I think! Sorry Phil. You wouldn't mind pushing me to the tow truck like everyone else did at Spring Zing would you? Later, Tim AKA Quaife boy

Kind of a joke about not drag racing. It is actually really fun, although after what I've seen you won't see my car out there! But if Friday night is open to the public, like it seems to be at many drag tracks, that would still be a good time. And Tim, if we do end up dragging, I'll be sure and do my part watching a bunch of other guys push your car off the track like last time! Quaife, here you come!

Ok guys, September is coming. I need to know details if I'm gonna be able to take my vacation. I know I'm not the only one either. I need to know at least the date and location. I don't care about activities. I can make them up as I go. Please let's set some detail up. I need to know.......Thanks, Tim

Gotta get some details. I'll need to schedule both some days off and there is a 67% chance I'll need to arrange for 1 to 3 days of on call coverage as we change the after hours standby on Monday at 5PM.

I know this doesn't help, but those who are making the decision need to decide soon so plans can be made. We are talking about 5-9 weeks away if September is still the target.

Cheers,

TB

Well if this falls through there is always Spring Zing! Granted we are lacking feedback on many proposed activities and no one seems to be willing to share their ideas at the moment(except the few who have posted on the SZ2001 forum, and in the POLL I posted in the general discussion forum)
Oh well... If I had any vacation days left I would be very willing to go out to Colorado to hang out with everyone!!!!!!

Anybody come up with any ideas for when this would happen? There's two of us here in Minnesota raring to go (and yes, he's wanting to bring his Contour!). Just need to know when/where so we can make the necessary arrangements. I work in a call center, so the sooner I know, the better.

Thanks a million!

What if we had TWO simultaneous meets? One for east one for west? We could then do video conferencing for when we have discussions. At the same time we would be updating everyone with pictures on the website. I would be ready to volunteer my efforts and knowledge to the effort.

It would seem apparent we can't even get ONE meet setup! Too late for me in Sept. now. Need at least six weeks to arrange things like work and around the Wife's and other obligations but the last week in Sept. is taken..

National meet is in the works. Sept 22-24 in Colorado. I'm working with Lance on details and events. Just wanted to provide an update when I could.

Lance will be posting details soon. Be patient, it takes a lot of work to get this together.

Thanks for your understanding.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

I realize it's a lot of work, and that it's way beyond anything I'd ever be able to do, but can we count September 22-24 as a firm, cut in stone date?

I need to see if my managers can make an exception to let me have the days I need off.

Sorry guys, I dropped the ball on this one. I'm afraid it couldn't be helped, though. I've been way too busy to make it all happen.

I'll be posting preliminary details tomorrow (Friday).

Well,

That was the weekend I could not be there.

Can't go to KC this weekend because of a party for an aunt turning 100.

Can't go to CO 22-24, mom is visiting from TX.

Darn family is getting in the way of my hobbies.

I know, I know, get my priorities in line.

Cheers,

TB

I posted this elsewhere also.

National Meet in CO?? Prepare to SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why on earth would you choose Denver? Let me tell you a few things about driving/living in the Denver area:
1) Your car has NO POWER! Please let me know if there is anyone out there that has actually seen an IMPROVEMENT in HP at high altitude.
2)It is pain in the ass to go anywhere! I realize that there are cities with worse congestion, but couple the congestion with the absolutely TERRIBLE roads (IE, potholes on the freeway!) and driving just sucks. They are repaving I-25, but Colorado is the only state I've been to where the roads are actually WORSE after they repave! There is a reason why people drive 4x4s here....it's the roads! Oh yeah, and don't expect any advance notification that there is any road construction. Typically, you just come up on a lane thats closed. No warning signs or anything. In the rare case you do see a "RIGHT/LEFT LANE CLOSED AHEAD" sign, it is six inches before the lane closes. I am not exagerating.

I have lived in the area for eight years and HATE IT! I bought my 99' V6 Contour Sport here and love the way it handles. The power seemed OK until I drove it back home to Washington state. WOW, so this is how the car SHOULD perform! I was passing everybody up six percent grades with plenty of power left over.

I apologize for ranting but my main interest is automotive performance and that just doesn't happen here! I have a 1967 Chevy 2WD SWB truck with a 454 and TH400 out of a 69 'Vette. In WA, nothing could beat it. Up here, after being tuned for the altitude, I've been dusted by almost everything with a V8.

Anyone here in Colorado, take your car to lower altitude, you will be amazed! And not just Contours. I had a '92 Mazda MX-3 with an 88 horsepower 4 banger in it that I bouht here and drove to Oregon, same thing...it acted like it had another 40 HP!

I think you could have chosen a better location for a car meet. Colorado is fine if you want to go climb or ride your bike up some stupid rock and gasp for oxygen as you do it, but not for cars! A meet on the beach, now that would be cool. Wanna test the handling and power of your car? Try Highway 101 down the Oregon coast. Twisty, hilly and most of it has been recently repaved...CORRECTLY! And there is nothing more beuatiful than a freshly washed Silver Frost Contour on the beach (Sunset Beach just outside of Astoria, OR) during a sunset!

Colorado sucks!

You know, with this kind of attitude, I'm sure that there are more than a few people who wouldn't mind if you didn't show up. Jeez, a whole bunch of people get hacked off because the event isn't near where they live, and here you are b*tching because it IS held where you live!

Guess it just goes to show ya, you can't please everyone...

Denver was chosen because there are CEG'ers in the area that are willing to go through the considerable time and effort it takes to make this happen. THANK YOU!

As far as lower power... I speak for myself alone that I am not making this trip for the purpose of maximum horsepower. Meeting Contique brethren and looking at each other's cars and comparing notes. The activities are cool too, I for one have never had an opportunity to drive in the mountains, and I'm looking forward to this. Less HP? not an issue, I can get 0-60 runs everyday without leaving town.

I for one am excited and can't wait to be there. Just made the hotel reservation!
