Hello, last night I went out to start my car after just returning from work and it wouldn't start. Just a loud click. After trying several times I gave up. This morning I took the starter off and had it tested (3 times, Autozone, Pep Boys, Advanced Auto) all the results came back the same, the starter cranked fine. I don't know what's wrong with it, brushes maybe? Could taking it out have jarred them enough to make them turn?

I had a similar problem on an older car, wouldn't start so I had it tested with the same results, I finally had to change the starter solenoid, after that it worked great. Would anyone suggest just replacing the solenoid or should I just put in a new starter and forget about it? My car is an ATX with 73k, I have never had any engine related problems until now, except O2 sensors.

Thanks Dj

I'd be more inclined to check battery and terminal connections than replace starter, based on the info you provided. Solenoid mounted to starter so check at store confirmed both.

In you prior case solenoid may have been physically separate.
