My strut brace rubbed a hole in my EGR valve,I put metal tape over hole, the light went off, and it got me by till I bought a new EGR.After replacing the EGR valve the light came back on.I took the car to Autozone, and 2 codes came up...Stuck open EGR....and o2 sensor reading lean... I did unhooked the battery after installing the EGR, thinking it would erase the EGR code?
Anybody have any ideas?Think the o2 sensor just needs replaced?or could the new EGR be bad?I think though a stuck open EGR wouldnt make a car run lean? What can I check next???
HELP!!!!

I would go with a bad valve.

You could try tapping the top of it with the handle of a screw driver or something, but since you just bought it and all, I would take it back.

Pulled EGR valve off, checked, and it's not open. It seems to be functioning okay out of the car. I vaccumed up the diaphram and the valve opened and closed fine. Think it could be an O2 sensor? What's the best way to erase codes? (I only unhooked the negative terminal last time for about 5 minutes.)

That should have been enough time to erase any codes.

What about the vaccum line that runs to the valve? Check it and make sure that it is not broken or come loose.

How long was it, between the time that you taped over the hole and you installed the new EGR? After taping the hole, you stated that the code went away, right?

It would not make sense for the 02 sensor to just die out like that and the PCM to sense that the EGR is open, right after installing the new valve. Also, the 02 code that you are getting is probably because of the EGR.

Also, there could be a leak at the gasket of the EGR valve, which would allow air to enter the EGR circuits in an unmetered manner. Sort of like a leaking accourden tube or TB gasket, UIM gasket, etc etc.... so check the condition of the EGR gasket and make sure all is well there.

At least you were able to rule out the valve.

No, vaccum line going into the valve looks good (it's not broken or loose).

The EGR valve was taped in October 2002. Every time we put the tape on after three warm and cold starts, the light would go back off. The car would run without the light on for about a month or two, then the tape would fall off, the light would come back on, new tape would be applied, etc. Finally, the light came on and stayed on, I went to replace the tape, but the tape was still there/not loose, I replaced the tape anyway, and the light never went back off. That's when I (got out a crowbar and opened my wallet) bought the new EGR valve, put it on, and unhooked the negative side of the battery terminal, drove it until the car warmed up then the light came back on (about 1/2 hour to an hour). I'm going to run back to Auto Zone to have them scan it again and hopefully they can narrow it down to which O2 sensor is reading lean and replace that sensor. Still open for any ideas/suggestions. Please help

Did you use a new EGR gasket?

Did you by any chance check the DPFE sensor?
(Gas pressure differential sensor.)
I know Ford re-engineered it and that was my problem.
I was getting ERG and O2 codes as well.
