I know someone is going to call BS on this, but the 1st autocross of the year here was yesterday. There were two '03 Cobras and an '03 Vette Z06, both of which I had a faster time than all morning. One Cobra ended up beating me by 2 sec at the end of the day and the Z06 beat me by 4 sec. There were a couple other cars that ended up with faster times too, but none by more than a few seconds. I was pretty impressed with my $4,500 4-door sedan. I had one angry Cobra owner though. . . . .
I'll try to post a website with results if my region ever updates their site.

1995 SE Mods- SVT Exhaust. SVT Intake, E1 SVT Wheels, BAT Euro Suspension, 20% tint sides and rear, 50% tint windshield. Future Mods- A new third syncro. It's my boring daily driver that I autocross on the weekends.

No thats extremely believeable, one of my first times to the track i was beating up on a track prepared cobra replica. A lot of people don't understand what a difference the driver makes in road racing or autox

It's all about what you do with your car and the way it is set up! Cars with big V8's do really good on straight line runs because of the HP and torque matched to the sheer weight of the car. So the bigger the slug in the front of the car, the more oversteer, torque steer and the more the front end wants to plow because of weight. Also, your car is a front wheel drive so it pulls thru the turns. Now, if you had an all wheel drive set-up you would probably be up there with them especially if the were just a few seconds ahead of you.

Very good stuff

Torque steer has to do with FWD vehicles only...

It's all about the driver. A good driver in a excellent car should beat an excellent driver in a good car.

Rear wheel driver V8's like Cobra's and Z06's are quick throgh those tracks as well....they just need more practice!

Isn't that backwards? If its all about the driver, I think that statements should be reversed??

Gator

also some friends of mine ran a student built B&S 10hp baja car at a SVTOA meet a few years back. They used tie downs to compress the springs and lower the ride. The officials wouldn't let them compete but gave them a practice run. Their practice run ended up being the fastest of the day.

I personally am on a Formula SAE team, and if you want to see fast autox's these are the cars, they are purpose built for autox conditions, weight ~450lb and have ~85hp. Oh and they are mandated by the rules to be able to pull 1.3g lat. If there is an FSAE car there, it will be the fastest car, unless it breaks.

I threw in some SM times as well.

This is my second year autocrossing, my only mods are 17" OZ Superleggras and Firestone SZ 50EP's (215-45/17) an Aussie bar, Borla catback, and a K&N dropin in the stock airbox.

No where near the mods allowed by my class. Heck, I'm still on the stock factory SVT springs and struts on my car.

The guy in the Celica who took first in STS spent about 7K on mods over the winter, the other two in front of me have much more experience.

So I do believe a Contour is a great handling car and can perform for those who take driving seriously.

I'm taking the Evolution driving school in two weeks to get even better at AutoX. (I've decided to spend money on seat time right now instead of just parts.)

But my times compare favorably to cars in STS, STX and even SM (and SM cars are allowed DOT race rubber, IIRC)

So I'm pretty pleased with both the car and the performance of the driver given my level of experience.

Uhhh, not exactly. They do turn good times, but we've had some other A-Mod cars beat the local FSAE team in St. Louis.

Peep here...

http://www.stlsolo.org/2003Results/E03trphy.txt

An A-Mod and an A-Prepared car both beat the FSAE cars. Of course the A-Prepared driver does well at national...
