Sometimes at start-up on my 96 Contour I hear a clicking sound comming from the rear passenger side of the car. This will laast for 20 seconds or so and then stop. I am wondering if this could be the fuel pump? It happens at all levels of fuel from full to near empty and has been doing so for a couple of years now  . Is this a precursor to a fuel pump failure or could it be caused by something else? BTW I change the filter regularly so a cloged filter is out of the question.

Yes, the pump is underneat the back bench seats...Well for the duratech...n-e-ways, clicking sounds like your fuel pump, are you having any problems with your fuel gague too?? I must warn you, if you go to the dealer (like i ahd to) it will cost you about 250 brand new....and thats for a new pump and fuel level sensor...for my SVT (1999 returnless system) thats the only way they come, I believe 1998 with return fuel systems can get the parts seperatly.

When key is turned to on before starting engine, one should normally hear what I would call a whirring noise from electric fuel pump for a few seconds as system is pressurized. Length of time will vary depending on how long car has been idle.
If this is what you're hearing then it is normal.

Did your contour come with a power anttena? My Mystique Did and when the anttena quit going up or down I heard a clicking noise from the rear passenger side until I unhooked the power from the anttena.

This is not a pressurizing noise this noise persists for the aformentioned 20 seconds after the car is started.

I do not have a power anteena.

Re-reading your post I notice you said rear pass side. Have you confirmed noise location by listening with trunk open? Fuel pump is on driver's side.
Edit: Correction, pump location is under center hump of car.

I have not done this. What will having the trunk open do for me? The biggest problem diagnosing this is that it it intermitant. It doesn't happen all the time so I don't know when to have the trunk open.
