I had a motor mount go out on me, I, of course, thought it was the cheap one on the transmission that connects to the front of the car. but after getting it up in the air and checking it closely, found out it was not. It turns out to be the hydraulic motor mount on the right side if the car at the front of the engine. It's so bad that while holding the brakes, with the car running i can put it into gear and rev the pedal and watch the right side of the engine jump up and then slam down onto the subframe.

Has anyone changed out this $70 mount before? and if so what kind of troubles might I be in for.

Below verbatim from '98 cd, Engine Support Insulators - Alignment Procedures.

1. Note: Alignment of the engine/transaxle assembly is necessary in the case of any repairs to the subframe and support insulators, or if the engine starts to make booming noises.
Note: The locations of support insulators and engine support insulators are described looking from the transaxle to the engine.
Note: Steps which apply only to particular variants are indicated with a note.

Using the special tools, check the position of the subframe.
15. Note: The subframe must not move during the tightening operation.
Align the subframe (as necessary).
- 1 With the special tool inserted, tighten the four bolts, working diagonally.

Special tools are various engine support devices and alignment jigs, unable to post pics of same. However, this is complete procedure for the re-installation of complete powertrain. You should be able to short circuit many of the steps, including alignment, if only doing one mount.

Hopefully someone who has done the front mount on the I4 will post, but you could try a search for 'motor mount' in the interim and see what turns up.

Sometimes these tasks exceed our DIY experience/abilities or require more than driveway tools and it's best to take to shop. Up to you to judge.

May have scared you off with above.

Here's a post I dug up from member bentleywarren:

Quote:

I've replaced the front and rear roll restrictors, and I removed, checked, and re-installed the mount on the driver's side. It's a straightforward job. I used a bottle jack, with a block of wood on top, to slightly lift the engine/trans. I only lifted it an inch or so, just to take the pressure off of the mounts. My only advice is to make sure when you reinstall the mounts that they aren't binding. When re-installing, the bolts go through slots, rather than round holes, so the mounts can be shifted as needed. If the mount is mis-aligned, you can get stress and vibration.

Makes it sound like a piece of cake.
