have any of you fellow cegers swapped out the atx for a mtx and if so how much work is involv ed

Buy a Contour with a 5-speed and save yourself the headache.

There have been at least a dozen or more discussions on this subject alone.

More than NECO member has done this successfully. It is expensive, but there are instances where this would be better than buying a used Contour with the MTX already.
