Hey everyone-

I used to check this site out regularly. Itâ??s been awhile now though, and unfortunately I only have some bad news to submit. While driving in Medford, Oregon last Wednesday, my â??98 SVT caught on fire! I was coming to a stoplight and all of a sudden my car shut off and my brakes went out! I e-braked to slow down (I was only doing about 25mph) and then pulled into a used car lot. Smoke started to fill the car and come out of the hood. I popped the hood and seen flames as I got out of the car. I reacted rather quickly and yelled to a lot attendant about a fire extinguisher. He pointed to their shop and I ran to get it. By the time I was able to douse it, things were screwed. Progressive Insurance says that my rear gasket leaked some oil onto my exhaust manifold and thatâ??s what ignited my engine. Not sure if thatâ??s possible, sadly I donâ??t know much about stuff like that. However, they arenâ??t even done with the estimate and already itâ??s over $9,000! Its like $3500 just for the main wiring kits (so they said). Donâ??t know what to do now. Not sure if this is a problem everyone should be wary of or has heard about previously. Just thought Iâ??d post and see what everyone else thinks.

That's scary!

I'm having my doubts about an oil fire, though. That would take a fair amount of oil onto the exhaust manifold!

I'm guessing a wiring short.

Don't count an oil fire out...think about changing your oil filter! I wouldn't doubt that if something came loose right there that it couldn't spew tons of oil right onto the manifold.

Anyway, that sucks...sorry about the car, keep us posted on what you end up with.

I know i am not from this region. But a few weeks ago we did some work on some kids car(changed Oil) and after school about like 6 hrs later his truck bursted into flames. It was a ford ranger. The kid called ford and was like look this is what happend. Ford was like oh ok sorry about that, they gave him a practly new vehicle, the vehicle had like 8ks on it. So my word of advice to you, is dont claim it to your insurance yet. Call ford directly, and tell them of your situation. They had this kid a new truck in less then 24 hrs. Now how about that for customer service
