late 80's, early 90's Escort GT. Halfway quick and handle well. Sway bar suspension is a plus.

Basically anything that'll strip to weigh nearly nothing, like CRX, Omni, maybe even a wrecked Miata. And since it's a beater, get a set of Kuhmo auto-x tires. That'll do more than anything else. And go have fun fun fun!!!

It sounds like you're talking about RALLYcross in which case I'd try to find something with AWD and a little bit of ground clearance.

Dude, there are only like 5-6 rallyx a year max. Half of it is in the dead of winter, and you already know how cold it was there... You sure you want to do this?

not positive, but we could use it for auto-x's too, so that doubles the amt of events.... i don't mind the cold, and it would be fun to fix up a beater. not planning on investing my life savings in this.

A good place to check is the classifieds at Grassroots Motorsports http://www.grmotorsports.com/

There are a lot of cars there that should meet your needs like an 87 VW GTI for $1750, or an 86 CRX SI for $1500 or an 86 Civic SI for $1250 or an 83, 84 and 85 RX7 for $1400 (it sounds like you get all three for that price). A lot of these cars are already set up for autocross/open track so it will save you a lot of work.

Yes the initial cash outlay is probably a lot more than they are planning not to mention the maintenance costs are pretty extreme. (it's a Mitsubishi)

Don't forget a Dodge Neon (DOHC) Again since it's newer cash outlay is probably more than you are planning for.

if you wanna go with cheap? get like a 91 either Beretta GTZ quad 4 or a Escort GT. You can custom do a turbo on either for next to nothing. the FMU is the most expensive part. I was gonna do a GTZ turbo all together with the T3/T4 hybrid that i won off ebay(125) and the sparco intercooler(210) all the plumbing and everyting it was a little less than a grand. Just throwing some ideas out there.

You need to understand racing better to understand that you dont need an exotic custom turbo to be over your head. I would check the rally classified pages as it's infinitely less expensive and easier to buy a pre-built car. You may make the point that it is too easy to do it that way, but i can assure you that you will spend more than enough time fixing problems, messing with setup, and fine tuning the car to your taste. Also if possible talk to local rally participants if you can find some names and numbers online, ask them what a good beginner car is, and ask them if they know of any for sale, the way a car is prepared makes a difference, and they will know which cars are a good investment.

Why would you seriously want to do this when you can buy dime a dozen turbo dodges. $500 gets you a great turbo dodge car, Omni, Charger, etc. and there are parts in the junkyard everywhere. Just add fuel and up the boost in those things...who cares if you blow a motor just buy another one, they are incredibly cheap.

Completely agree on the Dodge turbo, one of the cheaper ways to turbo. However, if I wanted to do both Rally and Auto-x on the cheap (and have fun) I'd go something rear-wheel drive, and non-turbo. And there is nothing like a pony car for cheap, tail-wagging fun.

That 323GTX would fit the bill nicely I think. Factory turbo 4WD homologation version of Mazda's rally car from some time back. A real screamer from what I hear.

Couldn't agree more.

Get one with a Turbo II engine if you get one.

You never read my posts regarding my "Rallye Aspire" did you? I took the hubcaps off, threw some "dirt tires" on the stock rims, put some KC lights on the front bumper, and used it on an overnight rural newspaper route.

Most of the roads were washboard gravel, and when it rained it got SOUPY! My wife and I pulled handbrake turns, jumped the thing when hitting the occasional unseen rut, and even backed it into a tree (on a pitch black night in the boondocks). I can honestly say that 4-door, 64 horsepower egg never got me stuck, stranded, or otherwise.

Only problem was lack of HP and, of course, it's FWD. Maybe with a Mazda motor and some suspension it would compete... either way, it's the only way to have that much fun with an Aspire.

Well, if you want to start cheap, a Merkur XR4Ti can be had for very cheap. And if you want to beef it up, Sierra Cosworth stuff will bolt right on for the most part

i personaly think anything rwd would be fun for both auto-x and rally-x, which leads me to propose the mid-80's Toyotas (corolla?) with rear wheel drive (the hachi-roku or how ever you say it) or maybe around the same time a nissan 240sx. both can be had for cheap, can be reliable if maintained well, parts arent to hard to come by, and rwd is fun for sliding around in the dirt and gettin' sideways on pavement.

cheap awd cars are harder to find, and just have more driveline parts that can break. fwd cars can be fun, you just have to use the e-brake rather than the throttle to get sideways.

I personally like the RX-7 suggestion. IIRC the other day I saw a turbo AWD AWS option on the RX-7, on like the 1988 model. I guess it's pretty rare, but it seems like a really good Auto X/rally car. Or you could try and find a Galant VR-4. There was one up the street for sale for like $1500, really great deal for a turbo, AWD, AWS car. Those would be my first choices.

i think it may be hard to find the hatchback version, but there is also a coupe version that may be easier to find. i'm not sure, never really tried hard to find one.

old rx-7's are an idea, i'd just be weary of the maitenence on the rotary.

I'm about done with the Contour, and take over my mom's Impreza OBS or buy a 2.5RS to do more mods than I did to the Contour. Above all, I'm going to use adjustable struts and coilover so I can run in AutoX and RallyX in that car. AWD rulez!

the most important thing is buying a cheap, durable car. If you rally or rallyX it, yuo're gonna crash. no point in getting something you'll hate yourself for crashing. Also look at class divisions. most go by displacement, and other items, such as turbos. Up here in Canada, anything over 2.0L will put you in open class, against EVos and STIs. Golfs are competative. this years national P3 champ was in a MkII GTI. Also, suzuki swift twincams do well, and are stupid light. learn how to left foot brake, and you should be able to hustle around a FWD car as fast or faster than a RWD car. The biggest thing is seat time. you could buy something fast, but if you can't drive, you won't be competative. Get something underpowered that forces you to keep speed through turns, and hold onto momentum. And stay away from AWD. just think about other cars in teh stock class (WRX, STI etc)

I know my thoughts exactly. My dad and I looked at the car, it needed a new paint job and the engine had really high miles, like 160,xxx. I know the kid who bought it and he just ordered a new motor from japan and put that in, now it's one of the fastest cars in Ft. Collins. I really wish I would have bought it.
