It's a resonator in the fender air boot.

I don't think there would be any harm.

The benefits may be a more desirable sound and perhaps smoother intake air flow. Just don't expect a large performance increase.

it'll help a little performance wise. what year and engine do you have? maybe i can help you get some more power outta the intake.

Intake resonators! Remove all four if you have a Zetec!

Lemmie explain which those are:

1. Paddle resonator - easy to remove, goes from intake to front frame next to the radiator. Some cars do not have this one.
2. Fender resonator - a little bit more involved to remove.
3. Intake plenum - More involved to remove, need more parts to make that work.....or just buy a CTA intake.
4. Airbox - easiest to remove, get a high flowing aircleaner

Have fun!!!!

or if you're really cheap, you can buy some parts from me that remove all the resonators except for the fender one, which you can do. some of it is made from PVC which may or may not release gases that can eventually hurt you or the engine. (includes APC cone filter). i upgraded to a CTA intake which does is a bit more effective and little better sounding, though i think my homemade intake had a bit better initial pickup, it takes my CTA a little bit to really kick in. i think this may be due to the fact that the CTA is so wider (3") and has more heat soak than my homemade intake did. also remove your exhaust res (about $30 for a shop to do).

I don't have any of those things on my little Zetec
I have a CTA Intake and an old vacuum cleaner hose from the fog light hole to the filter.
